It will be freezing! -2 over night.
Its a great student city, great fun. Had some good times down there. I worked at U of Canterbury. NZ Universities are quite casual

Hi
I am moving to NZ next Feb from the UK, married a Kiwi girl a couple of years ago and now planning to live the dream near the coast.
I am trying to decide if I should bring a 996 with me, as we will be bringing out a container anyway. I have had a look at Redbook and the 996 seems to have held its value much better in NZ than the UK - I am guessing that this is down to the numbers sold in each country? Wifey last lived in NZ about 10yrs and is amazed each time we go back at the number of european cars there now.
Are there decent specialists in the Auckland region for parts and servicing? Is there any real pitfalls to running a Porker in NZ?
Cheers for any advice
Barney

Hi Barney,
I'm not sure of the numbers, but I would guess that New Zealand has a high relative Porsche ownership, many of which are second hand imports from Asia.
It is a prejudiced market. NZ new is most highly valued, ex Asia is next, then Great Britain. People assume that cars from Great Britain have had a harder life e.g. Salt roads, higher mileage and less likely to have been garaged. Kiwis also seem to prefer manual cars. I don't think an ex GB 996 will hold its value. Unless it was a cheap C4S or Turbo I would not bother. If it was me I would bring a British car e.g. Aston Martin Vantage as there is still an an arbitrage.
As for parts and servicing there are absolutely no issues in NZ.
Hope that helps.
Cheers John.

Thanks for reply, I have been looking on Trademe & a few dealer sites, 2000ish 996 are advertised for around $50-60K. In the UK now these are about £12-15k for a similar spec etc and with the £ at an all time low (less than $2 - £1) it seemed like a good idea?!

Trademe have a 1999 996 Tiptronic with 80,000 miles at NZD 39,000. A similar car in the UK at a dealer appears to be ~ GBP 13,000. Both are offer prices so let's assume both are cheaper than advertised.
My calcs indicate the on road cost in NZ for the UK car is NZD 34,000. To get that car to NZ you would have to jump through some hoops with documentation and emissions regs etc. A trap for young players. Add some more costs if you want someone else to do the work. If your shipping cost is spread out over other gear then you may have bigger savings, but my research suggests that they advise against anything but the car in the container.
As you may have guessed, I constantly look at these things. I think the opportunity is with more expensive cars for older people. Less affected by the recession and tend to like the GT cars that Aston etc produce. Plus there is more meat in the deals with more expensive cars with exactly the same work.
No harm in looking, but go in with your eyes wide open. If you truly want to drive NZ roads in a Porsche, buy one there. Money is tight right now; every offer is likely open to negotiation.

All good points raised by John. Post on here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/f...=123&mid=61478 as many of the guys have imported cars from the UK so will be able to share their experiences.
Imported cars always tend to sell for "a little less" if they are not of a rare variety. Interestingly though if it was something like a 964RS etc it wouldn't make a lot of difference if at all.
If the difference in price wasn't much I wouldn't bother with the hassle. You may also be made to replace or repairs items on the car to get it in the country. One consideration however is if you really love the spec of the car and if you would struggle to find that spec here. Unlikely but worth a thought.
Again if it works out a little cheaper then saves you the headache of selling there and buying here. You will know what you have with your existing 911. You'll just have the importation paperwork to deal with. Check out that thread above as that should answer any detailed questions you may have.

Finally got off my butt and registered for the Porsche Parade at Taupo in February 2012. The Hilton seems to be filling up so I figure it will be well attended. Get in quick if you've been putting it off.

The weather in Dunedin last week during my visit was fantastic, sunny and cool!!! The U was nice, but doesn't have the infrastructure or resources for my work, so I won't be needing to learn to drive on the wrong side of the road anytime soon

Wow, has it really been 6 months since I was on here last?! What a year it's been.
J1nx3d, great to hear you got your car all fixed up -- looks great. As for that ski rack, what a statement! I want one and I don't even like skiing :-)
John, great to hear you've registered for the Parade -- I'll see you there no doubt. Is that a Bad Boys turbo? Great looking car, and NZ seems to be quite well represented for that model, if I recall correctly. Actually, I've just noticed that 993MAN used to have one as well!
I'm doing the PCNZ gymkhana on the Hampton Downs skidpan in the weekend -- should be a bit of fun. I've never done one before so I'm going to be hopeless, but I'll have a laugh anyway!
