Thoughts on the new corvette?

this thing will have the quality of a 60k car with a bunch of plastic. I wouldn’t compare it to my 720, my Pista or my 3rs before that or my Touring or any other super car.
its a nice looking novelty for 60k. Gm has done a nice job with it. But I’m not sitting here debating if I should order the Mclaren 720 lt when it comes out or get this. This is an additional “beater” that I’d consider driving daily.

The C7 was a very good car that I was never really interested in. The C8 is potentially a huge a game-changer.

Seems odd, doesn't it? I have never found any cars designed after 1947 to be particularly appealing. I buy today's cars because they suit a desire or need, not because of their looks. After I own a car for awhile, I usually find some design elements that grow on me. I'm OK with that. Plus, I never get too attached to a car. I think with a Porsche you get real attached to the prestige and exclusivity it carries more than anything else. If GM made it, most of you wouldn't touch it.

Can I have a hit off your crackpipe? Looks better than a Mclaren?!?! I’ve owned both Corvettes, and McLarens and no Corvette EVER looked better than my Macs. Corvettes are bad *** cars, and I love them... but they don’t compare to Uber high end cars.

The average annual return since adopting 500 stocks into the S&P index in 1957 through 2018 is roughly 8%. To be conservative, I used 7%. Of course markets go up and down, so I agree that if you needed the money in the short term, there is risk but for the long term it's relatively safe. The best I can get on a CD is 3% for a two year term, which barely keeps up with cost of living increases.
The 981 GT4 did retain its value quite well, but let's not forget that most buyers paid a significant ADM. Corvettes OTOH are discounted quite heavily after the first year on any model. My brother for example got his 2018 Z06 for $10K under MSRP from Kerbeck, and the Z06 is a low production model. But we can exchange anecdotal information all day long to support our position, so let's instead look to another source for costs of ownership: banks. Banks are fairly competent in assessing depreciation when establishing lease rates.
I checked a couple of sites and the typical price I see for a base 911 coupe is $1,299 per month for 36 months with $9,919 due at signing or well over $58,000 when leasing fees are included.
The 2019 Corvette 1LT lease payments are $599 for 36 months with $5,789 due at signing or approximately $29,000 when including leasing fees.
The only info I could find for a 981 GT4 lease was from a Rennlist poster: 36 month with 10K down, $1443.36 a month.
All of the leases were for 10K miles / year. The GT4 lease included taxes which the others didn't.
Lease rates are determined by vehicle cost, depreciation, money factor, and annual mileage. So apparently banks don't share your optimistic view regarding Porsche depreciation when the car is used enough to accumulate 10K miles / year. So although Porsches retain their value much better than Corvettes, it's not nearly enough to offset the substantial difference in price between the two cars.

On your 2018 Z06 example of big discounts. You are comparing apples to oranges. Yes, Corvettes get discounted A LOT, late in the model run. The rumors of the mid engine were already floating around and sales dropped probably even more than they normally would have, so who is going to pay MSRP on an overproduced outgoing model. BTW, this is part of the issue with a Vette. Because Chevy will discount the models down the road, all of them will drop in price, even the earlier ones bought at full price. Be that as it may, we are talking about a first model year now, and they will not sell for below MSRP, in fact, I bet many dealers will mark them up as well. Bottom line on mark up. If you do your work and or wait just a little, you typically can avoid it.
I haven't studied lease rates on cars in a long time, because I don't lease anymore, but I do know this, the residual rates on GT Porsches are a joke. They are artificially low. So while your monthly payment is way higher than what it should be because of that, you will pocket a nice chunk of change when you sell it. Just for kicks looked up a 991 GT3 RS. MSRP is $188k an the residuals on their lease is $84k for 42 months. Does anyone here really think a GT3 RS will only be worth that in 3.5 years? I wish.

this looks like a great car on paper.. Excellent price to performance ratio. The best anywhere. I suspect this will kill a lot of Supra/Z4 sales among others. Could also eat in to the hallowed Mustang market. A fully optioned Mustang GT is close to $60k. Why would anyone want one of those over the new Corvette? There isn't enough back seat in the Mustang for that to be an advantage. No wonder Chevy is killing off the Camaro.

Won't be parting with my 991.2 GTS. I love the car and worth noting I'm surprised that there will be no MT C8 (according to reports so far, such a shame). Great-looking car and I 100% respect buying a C8 Vette but I would never buy one considering the lack of a MT. Oh well.

I like it. I hope the comp seats are a bit more supportive for track driving than the ones in the C7. I will most likely wait for the higher horsepower version to come out.

yes $2k deposit, msrp, still have time to change config, straight shooter, got both my '17 SS and ZL1 from same, SS at great discount and ZL1 at $1.5k below
quite different story when I was asking other dealers about ZL1 at the time, many were asking ADM etc. Same with GT350, many wanted ADM but found a nice dealer in the countryside that was mostly a truck place and wanted to move the Shelby off the floor to bring in raptor... there are many solid dealers, you have to shop around.. I think Chevy will want to move these and produce volume, time will tell. BTW, N/A SS in LT1 was a much sweeter engine to wind than the more powerful supercharged LT5 in ZL1 so combo of LT2 and quick shifting DSC 8-spd should hit the spot. Also the active exhaust in both SS and ZL1 sounded awesome in its various modes with honest pops, burbles and crackles, not manufactured predictable fake sounds as in 991.1 and .2 sports exhaust (sad to say)...

I am also on a list for the new C8 at MSRP. I've been shopping the ZL1 1le as an additional track car and they are now selling for ~ 5-6k below MSRP (the 2020s are coming out soon.). Ford is still proud of their GT350s and not discounting them as much.
I currently drive and track a C7 Z06 and GT4, and enjoy the Z06 on the track more than the GT4. I know this is blasphemy, but true. The options on the Z06 (heads-up display, front camera, Performance data recorder, cooled seats, etc) were not even available on the GT4 which cost me 10k more than the Zo6.
p.s. Only the pre-2017 automatic Z06s overheat. My manual has been pushed on the track in 100F temps, with no overheating.

Exactly. Appreciate the car for what it is. Don’t try to make it what it isn’t- it isn’t a 300k HyperCar no matter how much the renderings try to make it look so.

We're just talking looks, nothing else. Of course it's not in the same league. But just because the 720 costs 300k+ doesn't make it pretty. And just because the C8 starts at 60k doesn't make it ugly. I think the 720S looks like crap, and although I'm never going to be a Corvette driver I think they did well with the design of this one. At least in the pictures I've seen so far.
