Tesla does impress me with how they are able to keep the weight low in their cars (comparatively to other EV's).

I think Elon is barking up the wrong tree with the Roadster being a $250k+ exotic. Sure it's going to be their halo car, but I think he would have grabbed more attention and sales by making a $60-80k 2-door sports car with SLA double wishbone suspension (ala 992 GT3) with decent battery (sacrificing trunk space for rear weight bias), wide tires and maybe even goofy doors. If he could coax out 350 miles and a 3,500lb curb weight it would be the next C8 Corvette in terms of demand and undercut the 718 EV in the process.

Agreed, by the time he ships that car, he will have the same problem that Porsche and others will be facing: the car will be expensive as hell, but its level of performance will be nothing special because it uses the same batteries and the same motors as everyone else.

Another teaser look at the upcoming 718 EV.
Very 992/Taycan like interior.
Range not huge.

Edit, new link

Wow, that's some avant-garde design work there, Dieter. A bunch of haptic buttons from the Cayenne parts bin, and the shaver from the 992.

Maybe this is what was intended to be shared, but it's not new (about 3 weeks old): https://www.carscoops.com/2024/02/po...ront-and-rear/

great, more stuff to break. Why invent a high tech solution to a problem that can simply be solved by using mechanical buttons.

I’m starting to think the target market for this car is not a Rennlist member.

Lol.

I'm curious to see the production numbers after the first year. It's a watercooler chit chat car to be bought, discussed, and then promptly forgotten about. I suspect the first year sales will be respectable enough for that reason, but the year 2+ numbers are probably going to be brutal. Hopefully this doesn't hurt Porsche financially too bad because I need them to stick around to make cars I like (even if I'm only buying EV DD's from them) cuz as far as I'm concerned they're peak motoring and there is no real good backup unless BMW's design team decides to stop doing meth on the job.

Bit over the top....no?

Doesn't Canada have an EV mandate, like the EU, on new car sales?

I wouldn't count on Canada to provide any meaningful EV sales for Porsche, particularly the way their economy is in a tailspin right now with no end in sight. I have family and friends in Toronto and it's very rough right now. The uber-wealthy will still buy 911's and GT cars, however.

A brand new, bespoke EV platform flopping for Porsche would definitely create a financial hardship for the company. Amortizing $6B+ across Taycan, 718 EV and Macan EV will not be easy: https://www.porsche.com/usa/aboutpor...ternational-de

Look at some other car companies now - Rivan losing $30k per vehicle, Lucid over $200k(!) loss per vehicle, Ford losing $36k per EV, and on and on. Very safe to assume that in cases like Ford that this impacts other developments negatively particularly when their lofty estimates way overshot the actual volumes. In other cases, Rivan and Lucid - I don't see a future for these companies and they will most likely exit the market in the coming years.

What about the EU and numerous US states and other countries that have emplaced zero emission mandates in place. The largest US Porsche sales state, California (and several others), have enacted similar.

Manufacturers need to meet these goals or exit the market. These are necessarily manufacturer driven realities.

That's my only point.

Let's see if we can get back to discussing the 718 product.
