Even if you had decent range, you still have no sound, more weight, no engagement from NVH, no shifting, and an experience that's 99% of what you can get from a $35k Tesla.

If sales of the electric 718 "tank" like they have with the Taycan, we will have the gas 718 around for a while longer...... how much longer is a guess??

Porsche has already started to back pedal..... They have gone from "718 going EV only" to "Porsche will sell Gas and Electric 718s at the same time"

Once the insta crowd, and tech project manager crowd gets bored of this thing, I cant see it being worth much secondhand. Add in the fact that some owners are overly concerned with resale, image etc. and you dont exactly have a recipe for something long term that will be successful.
Porsche is in a super tough spot with this whole every model EV crap. Customers with money hand over fist will upgrade to other brands (McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini). Those in between may look elsewhere, and those on the fringes will buy your usual assortment of Miata's mustangs, BMW's and corvettes.
Necessary disclaimer I like EV's, just not in these use cases that are being pushed down our throats.

Yup, Porsche is off my shopping list once the 718 goes EV. I don't want a 911.

I'm looking forward to the 718 EV. It has potential.
Personally, a 4 cylinder turbo is below EV on my powertrain list. I enjoy charging at home, instant seamless power, no maintenance, etc.
At Rennsport, one of the most interesting cars was the 718 EV racer, and the speed it was hitting on the front straight was impressive.

Im not sure anyone would deny that the speed will be impressive. But just about everything is fast nowadays so then it becomes if im not paying for the speed, which I can get cheaply anywhere why am I paying what will likely be 80-100K for a bunch of batteries with a Porsche logo.

I mean yeah it's great for what it is and I personally like it having driven and been in one, but there sure are a whole heck of a lot just sitting around secondhand. A cursory search yields a little under 1K for sale secondhand, some with very few miles and in some cases almost 35-50% depreciation.
I think there are less Macan S/GTS used for sale combined from the last 2-3 model years.
That is gonna be a tough pill to swallow on a sports car.

I owned a Taycan, for 6 months. Really wish I never bought one. They are hype machines and now the used market reflects that. Complete bore to drive, the car was an appliance and had tons of software issues. I got out before the market completely fell out thankfully.

Maybe the intention is to get them into a 911 if people are sour on the EV (count me as sour). But even then I would just start looking at everything and anything despite loving having a Porsche. For a sports car I see no use for an EV.

However, I’d guess that the vast, vast majority of the car-buying public would find “boring” to be the number 1 sought after feature in a car. Few people want an engaging vehicle. I’d guess that the vast majority of car buyers would love a chauffeur (human or electronic) to do all the driving while they sit in the back with a latte and a phone.
As “soon” (this is an unknown) as charge time becomes about equal to gas refill time and charging stations become as ubiquitous as gas stations, this debate will vanish and so will ICE powered cars.

I think the good part about your statement is that those who want an engaging vehicle are willing to pay for it, so it simultaneously incentivizes manufacturers to continue producing them while keeping the values for these cars high. I think the main culprit for this is an ever distracted younger generation of drivers combined with a lack of desire to be outdoors and go places / do things. Electronics have permeated our culture to the point where no one wants to participate in life outside their homes (how often do you see kids playing outside now?). Another sign is the ever growing smartphonification of cars (see Tesla with Netflix/Youtube/games in the car).
And I am saying this as technically a millennial who isn't yet 40 - but I recall I couldn't wait to get my drivers license and have freedom to go where I wanted and enjoy driving.
Now, excuse me while I go shake my fist at a cloud.
