FWIW, I will be 75 years old in two weeks. I've had 22 Porsches in my garage since 1973 and no, I am not a dealer and never have been or worked at one. I've had my current 997.1 GT3 for over 10 years and it has been by far, the very best of my Porsche bunch. I still do my own maintenance, I was an aircraft mechanic way back in my Army days, and I still enjoy doing everything possible myself.
With all that said, I've been wanting to mention what I belive will happen regarding 997 GT3's and GT3 RS' in the not-so-distant future, compared to the later and current 991,992 and later GT3/GT3RS.
I firmly believe that the 1999-2012 Porsche GT3/GT3RS models will be the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS of the future.
OK, that is just my opinion, but I do believe that it will happen someday.
Can you share your specific reasons as to why you believe this? You obviously lived through the value run up in other 911s so would be interesting to hear your perspective (with specifics).
As a millennial, I respectfully disagree. I think 997 GT3/RS prices will continue to climb as more of us are able to afford the kind of premium these cars demand not to mention the productions number are WAY lower. If you look at 997 GT cars for sale there are only a handful vs with 991 & 992 there are HUNDREDS available for sale. As time goes on it's going to be harder and harder to find nice examples available for sale which I believe will continue to drive prices up. Once I manage to acquire a 997 RS I plan on taking it to my grave or hopefully passing it on to my kids as a family heirloom.
For me I always felt like the 997 was peak Porsche especially being the last generation with a manual RS. It's been the dream Porsche for me since they were first introduced next to the CGT, but being so young I've been entirely priced out of the market until more recently (Although still 100% priced out of the 4.0 and CGT). The newer 991 and 992s are cool, but not nearly as interesting to me as the driving experience and computers have taken so much of the character/rawness out of the equation, not to mention they're now huge cars.
As far as "there’s so many great cars out there" I'm not so sure about that either. Porsche remains as one of the only car brands that still caters to the analog crowd. When Ferrari, Lambo, Mclaren etc. stopped making analog sports cars I've become 100% disinterested and will likely never own one unless a Mclaren F1 or F40/F50 suddenly fell into my lap. I don't care about having the latest and greatest model to show off or having the latest tech with flappy paddles. It's all about the driving experience and that's what these cars represent. The perfect sweet spot between modernity and ultimate driver engagement. They are the last of their kind and will never be replicated again.
I will share one boomer's perspective. I was happy that when my 60th birthday rolled around last year, I was able to check off a long standing bucket list item for a "special" to me P car after decades of educating my kiddos in the Ivy League and having no fun budget (I kid them that hanging on their walls in paper form is their Dad's LaFerrari). I have always loved the 997.2 body but the RS price increases came with an opportunity cost that made an old guy wince a bit. That and the fact that years of dirt bike racing as a younger person (with the resulting injuries that come from "proper" use) made the third pedal hard on me, I decided to at least get the thrill of an NA motor in an RS chassis even if it came with "flappy" paddles. Having never been in a 997.2 RS, I can only say that I am glad Porsche made a car that comes with much lower opportunity cost for the money that probably gives me at least 60% of the fun/experience of the cherished 7.2 RS for roughly 50% of the cost. And even though it ranks far lower on the Porsche pecking order it seems, the RS I bought is still pretty amazing in that it will bring something close to MSRP after seven years...Not many manufacturers can say that. These cars are all special and we are all fortunate to have the chance to experience them...any of them.

Well, i'm 72 years old. Bought my first Porsche, a 70 914-6 used in 1973. Have owned 35 Porsche's over the years. Currently have a 997.2 RS, my third one, a 73 RS tribute, a 997-2 Turbo aero package car and a 59A coupe. I agree with you and that's just my opinion too!!!!

I agree, I think the gt3rs 4.0 is that car reincarnated. Good reason they’ve been tracing each others prices the last 6-7 years
I would absolutely love a gt3rs 4.0 even more than a CGT personally
It's clear you have never driven a CGT. There is nothing like it and a piece of Porsche history never to be duplicated.
I am sure you are correct, but the shape of a 911 just does it for me, it is pure artistic beauty in my eyes.
People like myself, want a 911 and nothing else, my second choice is actually various BMW-M cars from my younger years, & various hatch/wagons, etc…but nothing replaces the prominence a 911 has in my imagination.
As much as I love my 997 GT cars, the CGT is the absolute be-all-end-all car for me. I'd walk to work this rest of my life if I could own a CGT!
I would venture to bet most CGT owners who drive their cars have had or have a 997.2 RS GT2 or GT3, I doubt they would opt for the 4.0 since the experience delta isn’t very wide, unless they are just pure collectors, everyone’s different but that’s what I would do… I like “bang for my buck” experience and a 4.0 isn’t that imo
My buddy owns a CGT & I'm his curator so I get to drive it. I'd give up multiple 997 GT3's for it ... its that good. He does not own a 997 GT3, & I don't think he plans to add one (I told him to back in 2018 but he never found one he liked)
