I have, in the past, broken nice watches when out in the field, or buggering around with something. But if I were to have a 'grail watch', this would be it...

And the quarter million dollar price tag does not dissuade me...

Military? No.
We do a lot of 'field' work, usually in the a$$ end of the country, pipelines, facilities, SIMS, marine, etc. etc.
Things (trucks, equipment, stuff...) regularly 'break' - I was once, many moon ago, doing some work on a ferry and the lead engineer says to me, 'You're thin enough to fit between the ferry and the dolphin (mooring pylon), get in there and hook up this widget...'
So I did, and in the process, the tide started to shift and I started to get stuck. My response to this (fear) was to start wiggling my way out (quickly). In the process I destroyed a very nice Seiko Chronograph that my father had given to me as a young lad... from that point on, I have limited the value of what goes on my wrist.

Imagine learning and wanting to be successful, only to get successful and be too scared of what others think to enjoy the fruits of your labor. People are strange.

modesty is often understandably seen as a "virtue", while flaunting ones "wealth" ostentatiously is often understandably frowned upon.
don't ask me to explain the related concept of noblesse oblige.
a common theme among those who have little, is the need to display what little they've got.

Being a 5th grade dropout does not define ones ability to make reasoned comments, logical observations, or read books...
I am a trained (but never practiced) Behavioral Psychologist and I only ever use that skill set to sell something, or win at cards.
How many of us went on to do something completely different than how we were trained? Don't be so hard on yourself, you're a good egg.
And, as an aside, you have a pretty good sense of humor - that'll trump an education any day of the week.

Today, I thought about building a fire breathing 4.0l monster and wondered if I could ever make it competitive on the track...
