If the rod bolts can fail how about the rods themselves? And the crank? Valves have been know to break. And valve springs. Heads crack. And so on.
In fact, I'm wondering if I should get new rods and bolts, or, I believe there are aftermarket rods with no bolts available. But, I think that will get too expensive in a hurry.

How about chain rails, guides, tensioners? Maybe new ones for the new motor?.

The car just got dropped back home. Starting to look like a freekin' used car lot here.

Cuda, here is an idea: why don't you send the replacement engine for refresh to JR (or somebody else with similar competency) and pay for the service with your blown engine? Just an idea. Anyways, since we are "neighbors" (I am in Carlsbad) send me a PM and the German lunch & beer is on me.

I plan to go over the used engine in detail with my mechanic. It's a small shop that builds race cars, etc. (Mulligan Racing Development) so he will be more than competent to do whatever needs to be done. But, I'd like suggestions from folks here, too, since there is such a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Beer??? That got my attention. PM sent.

I drive mine daily and as an only car, I can't say they let me down. I might change my opinion when it gets to 120k, but so far, it is around the same maintenance effort that any of the M3/M5 variants I have had over the years have been (and much lower than my E30 M3)

That's great! Unfortunately, Cuda can't say the same thing...

Googled it. I think you want the 986 forum, not this one.

All this time I thought it was a drink for people who couldn't handle "real" liquor, and now I learn it's a magazine for people who can't handle much of anything.

I hear that, but I was responding to the sentiment that Porsche's are not really useable as DD cars, I am also surprised that most people on here seem to baby them, obviously Cuda doesn't count, as he actually seems to have the ***** to drive his car like it was intended.

I think that is a very accurate description, also quite useful for ****ing with people

Beer and Cosmo, sheesh. Yeah, going the way I expect any RL thread to run. Still missing the *****, however.

So, let me steer this back to the matter at hand.

One guy PMed me that he thought he could hear a tappet sound in the video clips. Any of you agree?

Also, the car is somewhere in Houston (I don't know where yet). The seller said it would be fine if I wanted to send someone by to check it out. Any volunteers?? That would be fantastic, if I could get some eyes on it while it's still in the car and in running condition.

As mentioned earlier, the owner of the shop where the car is at got bitten by some sort of toxic spider, so is in the hospital, apparently slipping in and out of consciousness.

[Holey arachnophobia! You just can't make this sort of stuff up!!!]

So, the engine seller is working on getting the car moved to another shop.

Here's a spider that's living in the eaves of my garage. We named him Boris.

Is the decision I made to put in the used motor the "correct" one? Based on my musings posted above, I believe it is the correct one for me.
Well, technically, now that the first motor has failed and you start the process with a second motor, your chances are exactly the same that that one fails as your first one fails. Had you started out with the fresh 996 and calculated your odds at that time that two in a row would fail, then yes, that would be very low. But you're now in a different probability situation.

IMHO you are choosing a good path. It is not far from my path with a Raby repair. The repair included significant maintenance items that I would have had to do in the next 20-30k miles anyway so the bite was a little less.
