How many people here would not hesitate to plow $5K into a vet bill for their favorite pet? You don't see this as a wasted investment into a non-appreciating asset, you see it as an opportunity to extend the time you get to spend with something that, in one way or another, makes your life better.
You'd need to be a cold-hearted SOB to say, "No, just give Max the needle, he's not worth fixing." Right or wrong, rational or irrational, some of us feel the same way about our cars.

You need to know for sure.
Thus you need someone to listen to the noise and pinpoint from where it is coming.
If out side the engine that's ok.
If from inside the engine then that changes things. If the noise proves to be from inside the engine then you would need to address the noise and probably the best time to do this would be after the engine is pulled from the donor car and before it is installed into you car.
But before you fix the noise, you need to know if the noise is something you want to deal with. To know this, to be able to make an informed decision about this, you need to know where noise is coming from and knowing this then what might likely be its cause.
Thus I think your seeking someone in the vicinity of the car to check out the engine is a wise move.
I hope the noise proves to be exhaust related and the engine proves to be quiet and a solid replacement and you can get on with enjoying your car once again.

Now don't think I'm pulling a KK....My thought process comes from when I had to source a motor....it was suggested to me to get a new oil cooler. Basically start with a fresh one because the fins are clean as well as the innards. They are around $250 and so easy to change while everything is accessible.

Radiator shop can clean & pressure test for $10.
Primary function of the heat exchanger is to warm engine oil after cold start.
Porsche has a patent on the heat exchanger & Hans Mezger recieves a royalty for every car that has it.

Hey KK...didn't you have a list for everything to replace "while it's out"?
And about the oil HE on top of the engine, I think he meant at least change the orings.
