The Boxster wasn’t even manufactured in the same country as the 911.
Not knocking the Boxster, but the two cars are utterly different. Different mission. Different execution. Radically different price point.
You must realize the “996 saved Porsche” was a false narrative propagated by terminated Porsche CEO Weiderking’s million dollar defense during his 12-year criminal trial for corporate fraud. Conde Naste Publishing was its (family connected) mouthpiece, and Conde Naste owns Road & Track Magazine.
Porsche was never “broke” in the first place. That was the (criminal) lie that enabled Weiderking’s tragically failed hostile takeover attempt of VAG. Everyone believed it at the time, right down to the poor guys installing the (sabotaged) IMSB on the assembly line.
Connect the dots: 996 “hate” wasn’t ignorance; it was sabotage, and it was a strategic lie.

But what I want to know is how do the LeMans winning headlights fit into this story? 😁

Battle of the Metallic Reds .1 vs .2
Any guesses as to which one will reach the highest amount? Both are on BAT right now. Both are beautiful in their own right, but I feel it comes down to which headlights do you prefer?

Has to justify selling the 993 for the 996 somehow! Now even LSD isn't a desirable option on a 996.
(all in good fun, @bdronsick )

It's not just headlights, there are some other significant differences between the Mk1 and Mk2 996. Please see a summary list here, and a link to the magazine article for a review of the Mk2 when it came out.

M96/97 susceptibility to bore scoring:
3.4 < 3.6 < 3.8
3.4 < 3.6 < 3.8
I was more referring to the different versions of metallic reds and purely from aesthetic pov. I concede that my assertions should have been more encompassing of the differences. That said, the linked info requires an update. For example, I didn't see anything that indicated which engine is more susceptible in terms of bore scoring?

Google the fifteen year saga. Don’t bother with Wikipedia or any source controlled by Conde Naste: all lies & hype. The twelve year long criminal trial transcripts are online too, if you search hard enough. Great (endless weeks of) reading.
