Yes, but 996 is not plain-Jane. It's arguably one of the greatest automotive designs in history. Time proves everything
This was my impression also when I first laid eyes on the 996.....( engine not withstanding but I knew the short-comings could be remedied, overall a great design also) )
EDIT :: I don't care about collectability or even originality that much...I don't think of cars as an Investment but rather just value to $$ and smiles per mile ..

Collectible, no. But just go and look at any plain-Jane 911 from the late 70’s or early 80’s, and they are still desirable and not cheap.
I want to preface this by saying that I lovelovelove my 996. This is not meant to denigrate the car in any way! It's just meant to hopefully root its true value in some semblance of reality here on mother earth.
Yours is a fair observation, and it made me take a look at numbers. (I just picked these at random.) A 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe cost $32,000 new. According to Hagerty's valuation guide a #3 example ("plain Jane") is worth $57,000 today; a #2 example, really clean, $85,000
Adjusted for inflation, the $32K cost of entry is $96.6K today.
So, yes. $85,000 is a big number. But if I may, it's a big number for a 1984 911. Time, and money, marches on. To the best of my ability to figure, my 2002 targa cost about $81K new; that comes to -- are you sitting down -- $141K today. I put an FSI motor in mine on top of a boatload of other stuff and I still have a way to go to hit that number. If one were to look at it another way, i.e. buy that purple one and sit on it until it pays off -- I remain skeptical.
Back to collectibility. I intend to give my targa to my son at some point, and it will be on him to figure all of that out. A couple of things he won't have to worry about -- originality and low miles!
Here's one that could certainly wind up in the "collectible" category of 996's at some future date. Prices are weak on BaT at the moment, perhaps some lucky person will get a bargain.

$45K all-in for a Targa in Savannah Beige is probably all that money right now
For now. Still, more than 2X where the market was only a few years ago. Clearly, prices keep drifting up

I dunno. I can't see a garden variety 996 becoming truly collectible no matter what color it is. Aerokit, speed yellow, no miles, yes -- some day. That car, not so much. IMO the dealer is fishing for a rube.
Due to the rare-ish options, seems like someone got a nice buy.
There has been a 10-15 % drop for all cars
but in general I think all special 996 (aero, pts, posi, carbon)will maintain and rise sooner
its still a significant model in Porsche history
The market certainly likes low mileage and bright colors right now.
Agreed and those represent a fairly small chunk of the market. People have been paying a premium for low miles and paint colors so this is nothing new. I'm more curious to see how cars with 80 - 100k+ miles that have been driven and cared for do out on the market. Even then, these are cars that saw 5k miles/year or less! That's a more realistic representation of whether the prices are drifting up or not. Looking at the air cooled market, you also have some special models with silly low miles or a non-standard color which are fetching top dollars but we're also seeing some pedestrian models with high miles, engine rebuilds and in some cases ratty interiors still fetching good money. Will this happen to the 996? Only time will tell.
