There are still folks out there with money to spend and can buy what they want. I am pleasantly surprised at the prices for many of the 996.2s that sold over the past week or two. Bottom isn't falling out and is holding firm.

Non-S and non-X50 turbo prices are very weak. Plenty for sale under $50k. Dont get it, nor have i studied why. May be the best deal out in the 996 market.

Highest recent Mezger sales on BaT have been “non-X50” Turbos!

You have to parse between the highly desirable (and relatively rare) manual-coupes in unicorn colors hammering weekly over six-figures. And the vast remainder of Cabs & Tips trolling eternally under $50K

Look to the 964 market: where a manual-coupe in Speed Yellow can easily surpass a quarter-million dollars at Sotheby’s. But a Cab-Tip in Black / Gray will trade typically on Craigslist for $30K

It’s a “dichotomy”. IE something for everyone. From Seinfeld to Hoovie, there’s an a$$ for every 996 Turbo seat! 🤑

i hear you man, the special low mileage -or- x50 or S variants are going for big bucks and they should. What also should be going for higher prices but arent are the standard turbo. $50-60k for a well sorted standard turbo is a huge bargain. Especially when a C4S is going for nearly the same price. Don't know why turbos are cheap, but they are. One of these days the market will wake up to it.

Totally wild guess but perhaps people are searching for the NA experience more and more. There is no doubt that any turbo, even the base one is A LOT of car for the money with where they are today. That said, just about every other performance car today is turbocharged and soon will probably be some sort of a performance hybrid. The turbo is hugely capable but you will still experience the turbo lag that is of that era plus there is the potential issue of sound. Turbos don’t sound bad but they're not a NA motor and will not sound as good IMHO.

Pete, you may be on to something. The reality is that nobody really needs 420 HP on the street. You cant use it. And depending on how that power is delivered on the track, it may not be viable or even useable. 300-320 HP in our cars on the street is more than most can handle and/or need. Not to mention that the powerband of the M96 makes it a pleasure to drive.

Having recently traded my 996.1 C2 for a Turbo, I respectfully disagree. Yes 420 hp especially in the way this car delivers it is a lot for public roads, but my Lord is it fun! The Mezger engine sound is totally intoxicating with a slightly rough idle, moving to a quite soothing sweet sound when you’re just puttering around town, up to a metallic howl when you push it all the way. The way the engine tone changes around 4000 rpm is mesmerizing. It just feels very special. And in no way is the driving experience comparable to a modern vanilla turbocharged engine (I agree these are extremely boring). This engine is anything but boring.

Yeah can't compare a 3 cylinder 1.5 liter turbo Escape with a 996 Turbo. I have not found 420hp to be excessive around town, there's no need to use it unless you want to. It's really very driveable, especially with the tip transmission (that will probably set some hair on fire somewhere). On track it's great as well. Like any car it takes a little bit of getting used to, mostly to be at half-throttle through corners so the turbos are ready to go for the straights.

$3M 959 has 450HP I’ve never read any complaints

$12M GT1 has 600HP and the supermodels are always smiling

When 996 early Mezgers hit their first million I expect more of the same

(because these are all the same engine)

hint: @frederik gets it

$50-60k for a well sorted standard turbo”

Nope. You speciously conflate manual-coupes with Cabs and Tips

The mean retail price for a manual-coupe 996 Turbo with clean CarFax on Autotrader is now over $80K. The average price is almost $100K!

And none of those in desirable colors (those are being held now)

Classic 911 configuration matters to collectors

2002 Porsche 911 turbo x50 aero package rare 996 | Cars & Trucks | Mississauga / Peel Region | Kijiji
That's $67K USD

2003 Porsche 911 Carrera | Cars & Trucks | City of Toronto | Kijiji

That's $36K USD

911 turbo 2002 (awd) | Cars & Trucks | Markham / York Region | Kijiji

That's $41K USD

these are just a few examples. The more important thing to note is that these cars have been for sale for more than 4 months. That's tells me the price is too high. Although in Canada, transport and border issues are easy to the U.S. yet these cars are not selling. I think BAT cars are only an anomaly.

I Totally agree...The current prices/trend doesn't reflect it, but IMHO the Tiptronic is the way to go on the Turbo...

If power and raw acceleration is what you want, the "no-lift-shifts" of the Tiptronic and the constant torque applied to the wheels can't be matched by a manual...

I have driven a lot of really high powered Drag cars in my time both manual and Auto's, can can say that what you don't want is to upset the suspension by shifting gears..The higher the power the more the need for smooth shifts....

The people who insist on a manual on a Turbo Porsche are doing it for reasons other than shear performance....

So are we in agreement that the 996 Turbo (non-X50, non-S and non-low mileage garage queen) isn't yet reflecting the sum of its parts in the current market and prices should be higher?

Bdron, I love you man, but got no idea what you are talking about. All i know is that run of the mill 996 Turbos are pretty damn cheap. Someone will wake up and figure it out. New buyers will get alot for a low price. $50-60k in today's market.
