Brown cars are underrated. I'm a big fan of the 997 colour Macadamia Metallic - would love to see that on a 996.

What on Earth makes a 996 more valuable than a 997? I have owned them both, and although the 996 was a nice Porsche in it's day, the 997 was head and shoulders better. Each series of Porsches through the years have been better than the preceding. The buyers do not agree with that premise, but I believe it true.

By that comparison what on Earth makes a 993 more valuable than a 996? The 996 is head and shoulders better than the 993, but air cooling and round headlights hold value. If better cars = higher value the cheapest Porsche should be the 356, they're slower than a modern minivan

Default Pinky's Baby

Article in this months Excellence magazine interviewing 996 designer Pinky Lai.

The article closed with the following--

"While the 996 endured a long period of value depreciation and a generally declining interest from enthusiasts, those days may soon be over. After all, the 1974-1977 911's and 1989-1994 964's were long overlooked as choice affordable enthusiast cars. Those 911s, of course, exploded in popularity in the more recent past. The same sort of rediscovery of the 996 over the next decade and beyond would not surprised us."

I drive them both fairly spiritedly on a regular basis. I prefer the gearbox/shifter in the 997. Smoother and easier to operate quickly and more forgiving. It is a faster car and easier to drive fast as well. On the other hand, I can feel more of the road transferred through the steering wheel in the 996. It is heavier and you can sense every undulation and crack as the tires track from left to right over the road. The 997 in comparison feels very light and twitchy to me and almost a little vague.

Never driven a 991 but its only a matter of time now. I'll get to the bottom of this.

991 is even more vague. Not good or bad, just more vague. The "alive" steering feel in the 996, 993, 964 etc. Is a pretty cool attribute if you want a "drivers experience".

I drive both on a regular basis and they both put huge smiles on my face every time. They are totally different animals, both in looks, feel, power, & comfort but I wouldn't say one is "better" than the other.

I happen to get the exact opposite feel, my 996 feels "light and airy" while my 997 feels "planted and scary". Maybe its the FSI 4.0 vs the stock 3.6 but the differences actually add to the enjoyment whenever I switch between them.

No question alot has to do with the suspension set-up. I drove a couple of 997 C2s on the track and like the way they felt. The 991s I drove were so refined and advanced that didn't feel the track at all. But they were very fast.
