the market showed exactly how much that car is worth.

I'm not surprised. Been saying the 996 will appreciate past the 997 for a while. I am only more sure of that fact now that I own one of each.

This is only the beginning.

Edit: btw it looks like a dealer was bidding up to $92k

Sure would like to see some turbos bid up in price. Best bargain in the 996 market. Still scratching my head on why there isn't a bigger demand for them.
I love the 996 turbo, but may be related to the 997.1 turbo being such a popular and mechanically similar car?

My bucket list stable excluding GT cars:

996.1: C2 XAA
996.2: C4S
997.1: Turbo
997.2: GTS

If I could own a warehouse full of cars I'd obviously have both, and a lot more but I try to be realistic. Maybe other people have similar ambitions.

A different viewpoint might go like this, which happens to be my viewpoint. I am an enthusiast and one who just loves the brand and the driving. But, I don't track and my C4S provides plenty of performance and top speed for my driving. I drive with spirit but I do so on public roads so my ability to wring any car out is a bit limited. I often reach high speeds on the interstate well above 100, but it is only to say I've done it. I drive the car hard enough to keep the yellow out of the fill tube. So my point is, I don't need the extra performance a turbo provides. So maybe some buyers actually think that way and it may have an impact on the demand. YMMV......

I never drove a 997 turbo. Have driven a 996 turbo as well as 991 turbo S on the track . 991 is very linear delivery of power. 996 turbo back in the day was less linear. No question it was a joy to drive but different than a NA 996. I suspect today with tuning and turbo parts advancements you can find a pretty linear delivery of power in the 996 turbo.

But imho, there is nothing better than a naturally aspirated engine on the street or track. As many of you have mentioned, we may be looking at a trend with buyers targeting a NA car that's a drivers car. Who knows, maybe we see NA m96 prices stay close to turbo prices long into the future. Dunno.

And maybe potential buyers have realized after everything we have talked about on this forum over the past couple of years that the M96 engine is durable as he'll if you do the right things to it and take care of it. Not to mention rebuild options that take you to turbo power levels.

Happy for the buyer and seller.

When Porsche introduced the variable geometry turbochargers in the 997.2 it was a real game changer and I think what allowed them to get the NA like power delivery. You get the best of both worlds of a small and big turbo in a single unit. They sound pretty good but still not as good as NA, especially at the top end, IMHO.

Far less 997 supply. There will be trim specific outliers but I don't see what you're saying ever happening.

Very strong result for what I would consider to be the least desirable 996 trim.

On the other end of the spectrum (where I pay attention) - the cheapest 6sp/coupes are still at or higher than 2020 prices:

cheapest manual coupes on the auction sites as of late:
- $12,300 - 2000 C4 160k https://www.ebay.com/itm/134308807439
- $13,000 - 2000 C2 BLOWN MOTOR https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...carrera-coupe/
- $17,500 - 2001 C4 130k https://www.ebay.com/itm/204191463646
- $18,000 - 2004 C2 113k https://www.ebay.com/itm/354503152216
- $18,000 - 2001 C2 121k https://carsandbids.com/auctions/rxB...-carrera-coupe
- $21,250 - 2001 C2 87k https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...carrera-coupe/

Recently I went digging through the Pelican Parts Classified Archives from 10 years ago - aircooled stuff 3x+'d in price but the high milage 996s were pretty much the same price as today.

I do not know what HYG is either. But I'm guessing it means something like, the ugly red-headed step-child. And I wouldn't disagree. to People Of A Certain Age the 996 is and will always be the ugly 911. However those people are slowly but surely wandering off into the sunset. When I drive my 996 past the high school and all the kids in the 90's dolphin-shorts, oversized off brand t-shirts and dad shoes, it turns more heads than the 997. It looks older, more special to them. And those are the people who will be shopping for classic cars a few years down the line. Not the old guys who can't get over the headlights.

Now that's a good one. The symbol was the first thing to come to mind.
