Well this thread really accelerated! Lets see what this ME does today on the old BaT. Higher mileage than many seen before so should be interesting.

RE the conversations yesterday; I think "collectible" can be a loaded/challenging term. The word can mean very different things to many different people. The guy/gal with the multi million $$ car collection probably views "collectible" differently then the buyer who buys one as a second or third (weekend) car or the buyer who buys one and drives it daily. Everything 911, IMHO, will be "desirable" but all may not become "collectible" depending upon the unique vehicle/production/historic characteristics, the target buyer pool, and demographics. Just my .02.

Question...

So what makes a 996.1 ME special in relation to the other 996.1 Coupes? I ask because I do not have any clue.

Well, have you heard of the million mile Lexus? The 1996 LS hit a million miles without needing a pricey engine rebuild. I'd consider that thing a classic as it redefined the luxury category giving the Germans a run for their money.

The Violet Chromaflair paint, which in my opinion is one of the best colors ever, but is supposed to be awful/impossible if you need any paint work. The only other time Porsche offered Chromaflair paint was recently as a $99k option!!
It also has the full natural leather/ maple burr interior. A little plaque stating it is a ME and the number out of the 911 made. And 18" Chrome Turbo Twists.

I think that's it I don't think I missed anything. Pretty much it's just a really cool color.

Also, from what I read the 4WD system; that I did not know. That auction has a horrible end time in my opinion; 1-2PM on a Sat. I think the 3-5PM during work week is better; I have no data to back this up of course.

edit: Guess I should have known. It’s actually the Carrera 4 Millennium Edition.

Ok so I don’t know Japanese Luxury sedan trivia, but I do know Lexus won’t be collectible at 50

I believe the Taycan is the only mass market electric car with a transmission and it has a 2 speed transmission.

Pretty sure the LFA will be collectible at 50. It already is today. I know that's not your average Lexus, but still. I'm also sure people never thought MK IV Supras would turn into the collectables they are today. It used to be they were valuable because of the potential of the TT 2JZ, but now stock cars command huge premiums.

In addition to the paint and leather, it also had every option available at the time. The ME is a neat piece of history that marks a pretty special occasion.

So unlike the 40AE which has improved performance thru the X51 plus additional cooling, sounds like the ME is more of a cosmetic SE. Color combinations are nice. We will find out shortly how the market values the cosmetic enhancements.

I still question those chrome wheels though; to each his own. Reading up on that paint is pretty fascinating though.

ME went for 33k, very quiet auction (when compared to recent "circus like" 996 auctions lately).
