Here is the point I am making, the world is full of bobble heads. Same bobble heads beat up the 964. They weren't worth a cup of coffee for a number of years as a result. Then it happened. The bobble heads heard something different and then the perception in the market shifted. Now everyone wants one.
It was a comment made in jest. The concept that a 996 won't be collectible is just an opinion by those who don't know what the future holds. To me, it will be collectible, will costs reach 993 and pre...., who knows. Depends on the audience in another 10 years and how deep their pockets are compared to available inventory.

Every single comment here is pure speculation / assumption.

Last I checked, the Caymans have the same headlights as Boxsters as well. So does the CGT and 918.

Think about it...

Why can't the 996 end up being a high priced collectible? The answer is that there is no reason it can't be.

I know your comment was in jest. My comment about bobble heads had nothing to do with you. Just the general state of how people accept information as accurate and then pass it on without question as dogma.

Timeline again. 50 years, 100 years?

When a 997 cabriolet with an auto looks as old as anything from the 1920s does to our eyes... someone is going to want to restore it and putt around on a Sunday afternoon.
Just like people do with 50-100 year old cars now.

The only thing that might kill it, is the lack of gasoline availability....

Then again, people still drive these: http://www.steamcar.net/index.html.

I think a large reason why nothing like this has happened yet is that these cars didn't exist. There were a lot less cabs and a lot less autos prior to the 996 and 997. Also, I have never driven an auto Porsche, but automatic transmissions have come a long way over the years. The difference between an 80s auto and mid 2000s auto is often a night and day difference. You did specify a Tip, but once you get to PDK that's in yet a whole other class. Also, there will always be some folks committed to manual transmissions, like myself, I can't stand autos, but manuals have been dying/dead for nearly two decades now. As a result, I know a lot of older folks who haven't driven a manual car in 20+ years and have "gotten lazy" and just want to cruise with out having to deal with a clutch. And most young people these days don't know how to drive a manual and that's going to keep getting worse and worse. I remember seeing an article a couple years ago and the best "antitheft device" you could have for a cheap/commuter car was a manual transmission.

Ultimately, I think manual cars will be worth more, but there will be a solid market for autos.

Do you think the 996 will one day be worth more than a 930? or the original 911? probably not. So really all we are arguing over is where the 996 will fit into the hierarchy, with rare specialty models and the original 911s at the top of the list. will the average 996 be worth more than the average 997 one day? maybe, maybe not, but they will both be old collectable cars one day. I think you would have a hard time arguing that the 996 will be the one exception to the rule. ALL Porsches become collectable at 50+ years old.
Yes even the lowly boxer gen 1 will become collectable.
I passed up on buying a running (though rough shape) 914 and a 914 parts car for $800 for the pair a long time ago, because I didn't much care for them at the time, and thought they were very underpowered, and kinda ugly.
My perceptions have changed somewhat since then. The 914 was underappreciated then, just like the boxer (or 996) is now.
I hear you. My question was more rhetorical than anything.

The great thing about 911s in general, are that they are perceived by society as a "classic sport car". Time will tell which generations and models are the most sought after and therefore carry the highest auction price in 50 years. But quite frankly, as long as the price of your 996 is going up, who really cares if it will be worth more than an equivalent 993, 964, 997, 911, or SC?

When I came to this forum 20 years ago it was the same infighting but different cars..

There are too many 951's made to ever see a price increase.
My 964 Coupe will never be worth more than 20k.
Don't even consider a mid-year or SC.
Double LOL at 914 owners

Times change. I couldn't even buy a 951 or SC locally if I wanted to right now. Fifteen years ago seller's could hardly give them away on Craigslist. Why debate the inevitable.

I’m fortunate enough to have both a manual 996.2 and a PDK 997.2. I alternate driving them, and as much as I love shifting gears, the PDK when pushed in sport/sport + mode is a marvelous transmission and can quickly make you forget how much pleasure shifting manually provides. As for its impact on collectibility, the market TODAY pays a premium for a manual but that might not always be the case. Someday when all cars are self driving people will pay extra for an old fashioned steering wheel while others will question why one would ever want a car that doesn’t drive itself.

If the Classic 911 market ever changes we’ll all be the very first to know

But good luck betting on anything like that

If I want PDK I’ll go Lexus or Tesla

But for any foreseeable future I’ll be rowing gears on a 962-derived Mezger
