Bdron,
Hans just messaged me thru a Ouija board and suggested that you should focus on the M96 powered 996 carerras instead of the mezger powered 996s. He said that in particular, he is bullish on the Gen-2 996. This message was later confirmed thru old man Porsche who said that the 996 Carerra was always the one that he wished he could have designed and built. He leaves it up to you to balance the message.
😇

hot take: 911 generation values are going to stay pretty close to where they are at, relatively.
996 will always be the cheapest water cooled 911. followed by 997. followed by 991. followed by 992.
I know, I'm very bold.
Speaking of 991 anyone else watching this one end? 30 minutes left but looks like a great deal at the moment:

Super cool. Although I have one huge problem with the 996 Turbo car. I not a fan of the looks at all. There I said it. Don't hate me, to each his own. To me it's the least attractive of all the Mezger cars. With the best looking Mezger production car being the 997 Turbo! I'm too busy stuck in the 90's though to look at those right now.
I'm a huge Mezger fanboy, nothing has changed; you can find many such Rennlist posts going all the way back to 2005 (and other forums previously). And I was driving (what you call pumping) my first 1999 as early as 2004
FWIW I saw the 2001 Turbo US patent application in the late nineties, almost two years before the launch: blown away
I said 6TT is the next Countach then, and I'm still sayin it today
Only difference is perhaps one or two people are listening today

I continue to be amazed at the lack of Gen-2 996 Coupes that are for sale. Boatload of convertibles, Targas and C4S. Those that are for sale are on their 4th to 6th owner and are worn.
What this tells me is that the Gen-2 Coupe owners in general aren't selling. There is your hidden gem folks. Find one.

Mezger was retired yes, but he was still consulting heavily for Porsche on both the 986/996 Carrera, and the 996 GT1, GT2, GT3 & Turbo series motors. In fact Mezger held multiple patents on both motor designs (only one for M96 Carrera), for which he collected royalties from Porsche until his recent death
FWIW Mezger is quoted in his autobiography as strongly recommending to Porsche against the M96 ball-bearing type IMS support in the Boxster/Carrera, however he was overruled “by pencil pushers in accounting”, as he put it
Thus Porsche Motorsports attributes design of the entire homologated M96.7x series GT1 motor series solely to Hans Mezger, and it was Porsche itself who first coined the term “Mezger” in direct reference to it, and it’s GT/Turbo derivatives across generations 996 & 997
All in Mezger’s book “Porsche and Me” good reading-

I would be interested to know what he patented on the Carerra M96 3.4 engine . The only thing that I think is truly unique besides the architecture is the IMSB and the hydraulic "Vario-Cam"
