Default Misadventure

Monday, I needed to pick up 2 gallons of deck stain. So I packed up the old can for matching and rather than take one of the daily drivers (Outback or Accord), I felt like a trip in the recently acquired 996. After playing tennis, I returned and picked up the 3 gallons and stored them in the frunk in a cardboard box. Later in the day as I was heading out to play some more tennis, I went to remove the cardboard box with the 3 gallons of (oil based) stain and to my horror discovered that one of the cans had leaked. And the cardboard box had likewise JUST started to leak. I patronize a locally owned paint store where I pay stupid prices but feel good about it. My rage was through the roof. Anyway, the volume of stain in the frunk was minimal and I was able to clean it out with a small, dark stain remaining. My garage floor is a mess and I need to trash my tennis garb. My anger had me in a mood for 2 days and my wife is just now starting to talk to me. I'll look for a new piece of silver liner for the frunk. Lesson learned.

Installed DEPO tails and a new light switch!

The adventure began, when the LED bulbs in the stock housing started flickering. Removed the housing to check the bulbs and the contacts were broken...complete with little ***** of foil the pervious owner used to "fix" it.

So I though it'd be a good time to freshen up the rear with some DEPO housings. Got them installed and the right side tail light (and side marker) would only work intermittently...since brake, blinker and reverse lights worked, it had to be the light switch.
So, I replaced the light switch (took 15 minutes) and works like new!

New front rotors and pads, new rear tires, Pagid rotors, Akebono pads.

Rear tires had about 5mm of tread left, new ones are about 7.2mm. I had all my tires hunter road force balanced and one rear tire was 59!!! The other rear tire was 24. Replaced them, one is 6, the other 8!!!

Yeah, no kidding! Tires were $840, 18" Michelin Pilot PS2's. Brake parts were around $250.

^I wonder if my goalie equipment would fit? Pads in the frunk and everything else behind the front seats, perhaps. Hope to get back to it in the fall…haven’t played since March 2020. But the good news is that my gear is actually dry now!

There's actually a recent thread in the 997 forum discussing that exact topic:

Looks great! Are those 17's? I secretly want a spare set of 17's just to have.

Cleaned my radiators and replaced a cracked air duct on the passenger side radiator. I did notice an improvement in cooling. One additional step I took that I haven't seen mentioned on RL is that I used a evaporator coil cleaner to really clean the fins. After removing and vacuuming out the leaves and dirt, a lot more dirt came out after spraying the radiators and condensers with coil cleaner and then rinsing them thoroughly with water. The cracked air duct may have also been a significant factor -- can't really tell whether or how much it reduced air flow to the radiator.

The front underbody panel also had cracks -- will need to replace that next. It wasn't immediately obvious how to remove the old panel, I guess it will be more obvious when I look up the parts diagram and see what fasteners there are.
