Just more proof that there are many people with more money than brains.

Or, just so much money that it really doesnt matter to them and renders your "value" judgement moot.
Have you ever considered that?

I think it's more likely to be someone with a glut of money but limited time who wants the car now, and doesn't care about leaving their beneficiaries with $400k less.

When you guys are 71 and go through a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery you will focus on time not money as your problem. Waiting two years is just not a rational decision to save $100,000 when let’s say you have an estate worth $5,000,000 — but if your estate is worth say $10,000,000 or $50,000,000 or $100,000,000?

money is still relevant for rational “rich” guys when it comes to buying an investment but when it comes to buying a toy - time matters.

what about cruise trips my friends have taken that cost them $50,000 for themselves and wife? Some of them do these twice a year - that is $100,000 gone forever - no residual value at all. That car could hold its value - heck if they live long enough - appreciate.

with the PTS program suspended - and perhaps for the entire year or longer - cars in a popular pts color would deserve a premium.

Waiting for PTS to come back could take a year or two and then getting an allocation - imagine this is your first new Porsche- so you don’t have any way to jump to the start of the line at a dealership - or write a piece of paper and drive it this weekend.

imagine you are a guy that has owned Ferrari’s - this car at $400,000 is cheap to your mind that has been conditioned to pay $750,000 for a car. Half price!

my friends that are Corvette guys think paying $150,000 for a 911 is insane —

surprised that car didn’t sell for $450,000 —-

I am paying for a Panamera sedan next week - finally arrived - $178,000 and I know that is the worst investment in the entire Porsche catalog and in ten years will be worth likely $20,000. And it is a hybrid so with a dead battery it could be worthless.

but my plan is for my wife to drive it to my funeral so I will never take the depreciation hit in fact. The most expensive cars on the road are these luxury sedans by far. This TTurbo S will still be worth a lot of money in ten years - maybe even sell for a profit.

This is 100% spot-on. The idea that it is dumb for a guy who has a billion dollars to blow 100k on having a car immediately that has a spec he likes is absurd. It would be like saying it is dumb to spend $100 on a decent bottle of wine at a restaurant when the same wine can be bought in the store for $50 or a similar wine at the restaurant is only $20.

For any rich guys on here judging someone for blowing huge money on a toy, I hate to break it to you, but unless you are Musk or in that realm, there are a lot of people out there who are richer than you, and they don't give rats *** about $400k. I am not talking just about Musk-types, but even regular rich guys for whom $400k is like a bottle of wine to most people. My guess is that they mostly are not on this forum and don't care that you think that their car choice is dumb, just like you don't care that the teenager buying a case of pabst for $15 thinks that your $100 wine shows that you have more money than brains.

If someone pays a lot more for something than you would pay, they likely want it more than you do and/or can afford it more easily than you can (considering other things one wants to buy). Unlikely that they’re ‘dumb’.

How do you know what this buyer should or shouldn’t do?

I think from the comments of that auction, the winning bidder owns a singer in that same color combination so it kinda makes sense. I’m surprised with all this back and forth about prices and what people should or shouldn’t pay. It’s a personal choice and none of my business what others do. I am a hobbiest and take a lot of delight in the various cars and variants. I get what I’m willing to pay for and that’s it. I’m not wasting my time, which I can never recoup, on pining away for something or dwelling on “the injustice or it all.” YMMV
