This. Way too much is being read into an off the cuff "interview" by a blogger with no follow up.

A conspiracy theorist could conjecture that the publicity from the engine fires was so catastrophic that Porsche felt the need to distance themselves completely from the GT3's 9A1 to avoid the inevitable jokes, etc. The new engine development and testing would have been underway across a range of displacements and power outputs for years already. Thus a 1 year delay may have been sufficient to switch the RS motor from using the planned 9A1 over to the new standard, presumably simply modifying the heads, etc already developed and tested for the GT3 RS as it was originally intended. Much of the work would have been done on the engine test benches, but the swap would have necessitated running at the 'Ring, etc to be sure, which explains the extra running the car's done over the last year after the design should have been frozen.

I don't know, but it fits nicely enough that my money is now on a non 9A1 base architecture. Which would make the GT3 the last of the 9A1s...
The 991 GT3 motor already shared only 4 parts with previous 9A1's and now there is going to be a completely new motor again for the RS? I don't know either, but I think much will be carried over from the GT3 to the RS. We've been speculating about this for a full year now, hashing and rehashing many of the same ideas. I guess we'll know in another month or so.

Even if the pipe dream comes true, I won't be stressed; I couldn't be happier with the GT3. Even if the RS motor is significantly changed it will cause no regret because I wasn't going to spend $50K more for a car that was less suited to my needs anyway, no matter how different the engine is. There will always be something "better" just around the corner. No point making myself crazy about it.

And they developed a new engine for the RS in 8 months, including design, fabrication and testing?...I don't think so. If it is not based on the 991 GT 3 motor, it was planned long before the fire fiasco. C'mon now, motor development takes more time than that, especially for a car like the RS. If they truly switched gears last February I wouldn't touch that car with a ten foot pole. Porsche is either considering the 4.0L 9A1 a "new" motor due to displacement and not being a Mezger, or they have been developing the motor alongside the 9a1 motor long before the first GT3s were delivered. The Fires would have nothing to do with it.

Makes a lot of sense to me.

The RS engine is the same as the GT3 engine all new from ground up with only a few shared parts from 9A1.

Thanks for putting the debate to rest. This seems entirely plausible and fits nicely with what we know so far. I'm sure your source must be spot on.

Ok, now what other wild speculation can we entertain ourselves with? Anyone else heard this RS will come with 5-lugs, or perhaps optional back seats???
