Individual interview. Question clearly asked and answered.

Final question: will the new motor be raced?

Tick tock.

I'm still surprised by the news of a new motor, but it does make me feel better about sitting out the 991 GT3.

The SLS Black Series would be the one to have. But at $300k+, lots of very good competition in that category...
the black series and C63 coupe suffered from the all glass roof in the USA, it was deal breaker for me

Another question to be answered....

We know now how what is similar and what is not between the mainstream 9a1 engine in the Carreras and the 9a1 in 991 GT3.

Assuming the interview with Hatz is truly a reveal and can be taken at face value, it will be interesting to see how much is shared between the new RS engine and the next generation Carrera engine. Will the new RS engine be more or less differentiated from "generic" production engines than is the GT3 engine?

Wow! So much for all the speculation! We are getting closer to Geneva! A brand spanking new 4.0 with a 9000 redline producing 500hp sounds pretty good! Then detune the engine, a lot lower redline with two turbos for the rest of the line up! Just don't put that pit lane function in the RS. No one will use such a feature in a street legal track car! Or maybe they'll change the DE rules.

So the 991 GT3 engine is 80% different from the regular 9A1 but the 991 GT3 RS engine is 100% different from the 991 GT3 but 80% the same a the regular 911 production engines from MY2015 on? Rubbish.

The 991 GT3 engine is 80% different to the 9A1 but 80% the same as the 991 GT3 RS engine and they are both the platform for the MY2015 engines moving forward.

I think you will find the 991 GT3 engine was always the tech basis for MY2015 cars hence increased fuel rail pressures (Ethanol compliant) and seperate baffled dry sumps etc. PAG are now trying to position the future engines in terms of marketing around the 991 GT3RS engine and not the 991 GT3 due to the earlier issues. This is how I understand the situation as I have been told.

Imagine if the 991 GT3 has a unique engine 80% different from what came before and after. Imagine if the 991 RS engine which is essentially the same architecture was not used as the basis for competition either! I probably wont have my GT3 by then but Id imagine it would become a collectors piece! It seems rather unlikely tho...

I dont think they can get the track app functioning correctly yet. Apparently the pit lane function needs a transponder. Why would they bother!

I would not call the GT3 engine 80% different than the regular 9A1, but you're welcome to disagree. I started a new thread here in case you missed it:

And one more quote that implies a new generation of engines are coming:

Porsche product boss Wolfgang Hatz confirmed to Autocar that the next RS car will be the first 911 powered by a new generation of flat-six engines.

Peter. I agree its curious. I dont want to enter a debate on it but my take is that PAG consider the design to be fundamentally updated (80%?) as the important functions have been redesigned. The official PAG documentation for the 2013 991 GT3 lump consistently reiterates that its "all new". As you have demonstrated it shares some components with the cooking 9A1 engine. However the 9A2? engine will do also I am confident. The 991 GT3 engine was built to Euro 5 compliance so no doubt there would be some changes if indeed the 991 GT3RS engine is Euro 6 compliant as one would expect from the Hatz statement. However I am led to believe for E6 compliance the engine does not require a complete re design.

Pete. I believe you are an engineer. You can make your own call on this debate but Im told we are looking at essentially the same engine here, regardless of the marketing speak. However my information is 6 months old and anything may have changed, although generally the product map would have been pretty mature by mid 2014 one would have thought....

I'll never understand statements like this. Is it for re-sale concerns? The 991GT3 is the best performing GT3 to date, even out performing past versions of the RS. Sorry you missed out.

Regarding value, if the new RS becomes the first motor to define the future of the next line of 911s, how unique is that? I agree with Macca. If this is truly the case, the 991GT3 will be unique to say the least.

The whole story is kind of funny.....Here's the new GT3....all the reviewers and owners praise,,,,,oh no, Two caught on fire with silence for four months.....carS back on line....all the reviewers and owners praise even more.....Porsche...no more 9A1 for you.

If one reads the current crop of quotes Hatz comments in context with the marketing literature above one could say the RS engine is entirely new. Entirely new compared to the previous generation RS engine. This is the play on words we saw with the 991 GT3 in various interviews when the car was announced. If the changes over the 9A1 make up in part the changes that will be seen in the MY2015 engines then we have an entirely new engine that is the basis for the engines moving forward! Obviously the compression of a turbo engine along with the requirements of a valve train capable of operating at 9000 rpm will not be needed so one could actually question what parts would be used in a cooking 9A2? engine vs the 991 GT3RS engine? I think we must assume is the engine is new that the crankcase/bottom end has been redesigned with forced induction in mind. The changes could be quite minimal as they are between 964 & 993 for example.

I am an engineer, though I have zero inside knowledge here and so I'm simply reading the tea leaves like everyone else. My take given the tea leaves I see:

We will get a new architecture. This means critical engine dimensions and components, things like bore, stroke, components and placement will likely all change. Parts like the piston rings, generator and flywheel, plus hundreds of others, have stayed constant since 2009. These parts, shared across many models including the GT3, have been produced in the tens or hundreds of thousands. Those parts will all change, and we'll see a new set of parts that will last for the next six years.

Changing parts, however, is just a matter of changing tooling and some dimensions in CAD. Once you know why even a complex part like a generator works you can make it larger or smaller as needed. The understanding and the conceptual fundamentals behind a part is the import bit.

On this front I have little doubt that many (most?) of the concepts and learning from the GT3 engine will be retained. The high rpm rocker cam will be built on, and even if no actual parts are shared with the new RS the fundamentals will be shared. These are the more important at the end of the day... $.02
