Ya I kept the original casting, had the impeller removed, the shaft hole welded shut, and removed the thermostat. I added a plate on the inside to block the bypass circuit so it is always routed to the radiator.

The warm up cycle for the controller I have is pretty crude. I can't remember the exact time and sequence but it's something like 15 seconds on/15 seconds off until it hits a certain temp. The problem is that 15 seconds on allows for too much cooling before it shuts back off when the weather is cold so it is just slow to come up to temp.

As a software engineer it has always driven me nuts, haha. With the data provided by the temperature sensor and some very basic code you could accurately and safely ramp up the engine temperature in a very quick and efficient way. I have been tempted to just get a raspberry-pi and have a go at it but lost motivation when I moved to Cali. Plus their new controllers look like they are doing exactly what I would have done so it's probably not an issue anymore, I just need to upgrade.

ALL - If you have sent in an oil pan, could you please comment with the year of your engine? We have 15 pans and want to make sure we keep everything straight! Thx

Mines a 2010.

Edit: I pulled my engine from a 2010 Jetta, the engine code is CBUA, and the pan I sent is the one off of the engine from the car I ripped it out of.

Just to clarify, a lot of the pans were sent from eBay purchases, so if your pan is one of them, please try to look up to year that the ebay pan came from, and let us know that in addition to the year your actual engine is. I believe there are really only two variants of these pans in the VW applications and they are interchangeable, but just to be safe I'd like to try to keep track of this information.

Does that mean there will need to be 2 different machining processes? Or, since they're the same can they be sent through the same code

Same cnc program. Just a slight variation in one little area of the sheet metal, that won't even be visible after welding.

See the little triangle? That’s only there for later pans.

how big is the gap there, could you just fill it with a weld puddle instead of making a whole 'nuther piece of sheet?

Omg that video was amazing. I think I'll just leave it on a loop in my headphones at work all day today haha.

Gotcha, looks good to me. That shouldn't have too much of a burden on the plasma cutting; two versions for one order potentially

My oil pan is a 2008. I'm really looking forward to seeing that car on the dyno, hopefully the fender exit exhaust won't blow out your mic!

I'm having all the sheet metal made with the triangle. I think 90% of pans will be late style with the triangle. The other 10%, the welder can just trim the triangle off.
