I have seen this car in person and, from my perspective, it is not a bad car. It is very original and has had basic maintenance performed which may limit the number of surprises and "have to fix because the last mechanic did not know 928's" issues. However, it is showing it's age and is in need of significant deferred maintenance. If I were to buy this car, I would expect to have to pull the engine for timing belt, fuel lines, intake refresh, head gaskets, OPG, motor mounts and all of the other WYAIT incidentals. Interior definitely needs attention. Carpets may be able to be saved but the seats need to be redone. I did not take a hard look at the exterior but, at the very least, it needs a full paint correction detailing and every one of the wheel needs to be stripped and refinished. That would be the minimum assuming no surprises. That being said, I have not driven this car, have not had it on a lift to see the condition if the underbody (it is a New England car afterall), would certainly recommend a PPI, and being an auto would want to have the end play measurement checked.
So, it is a bit of a project car. There are certainly a lot of cars up for sale that present better cosmetically but I see very few 928s come up that would not need a similar level of mechanical attention. Incidentally, my car is stored at the same facility and is for sale on consignment. If anyone is looking for an S4 5-speed that is fully updated and ready to go another 25 years, let me know.
I think this was a Willhoit car that he was offering at $130k quite a few years ago.
I'm not sure what the difference in value is for collector car vs. good GTS. But this car supposedly sold at Sotheby's last year. Doesn't seem to fit in with the St. Louis Car Museum story unless the sale fell through. https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/a...928-gts/733355
This looks like a pretty nice price to get yourself into an S4 (with some good and expensive work already done). Ocean Shores is a bit off the beaten path, but could give you a great excuse to drive down the coast on Highway 1 (which I highly recommend): https://seattle.craigslist.org/est/c...186644725.html

Dang that is nice. I need to contact the seller to find out what shop upholstery shop in Aberdeen he used.
Oh and BTW, that price is super reasonable IMO if the car drives as god as it looks.
I freely admit to not knowing much about later cars, but is that what $30k+ buys in a GTS? I mean, it looks tired. Especially the interior. For that much money I'd expect it to be nearly concours.
I agree the interior looks a bit raggedy and not sure of maintenance history. Pushing this example into the lower digits. But a concourse 928 GTS price is skyrocketing.
Sell price for our cars are still underrated. Our own community is at times the cause of the problem.
Why is a luxury sports car, in comparable $ with inflation, IE a GTS is a 150k car if sold today.
Sell for 30 cents on the dollar ? When an American Muscle car sell for similar comparison of original value.. IE a 70 chevelle bought for 7500 sells for 35k plus and 65k plus for a "resto-mod" ?
It's all in perspective or assumed value. So yes I partially blame our own community, Even the gremlin is gaining value
I believe IT IS TIME for our 928s to skyrocket in value.
Sorry for the gold diggers out there but it's time.
Perfect example is what has happened to the BMW.
Values dropped faster than a faster anchor.
OK, let the bashing begin also use amsoil 50w ha ha

I've had this conversation on the Radwood FB group, and I don't see 80s+ cars ever appreciating in value the way earlier cars did. There will always be museum pieces and super-rare cars that will command top prices, but I doubt the typical well-maintained or restored 928 driver will never get much above the low $20s (considering inflation). The simple fact is that scarcity and demand drive prices, and these cars aren't scarce nor are they in demand. Nice ones are scarce, but you can buy sub $5k 928s all day, many of them runners or close to being runners. Going to demand: People want the cars they couldn't have when they were young adults. Most 80s kids lusted after the 911 Slant, or the 959, not the 928. 914s are going up in value, but they didn't make many, and they were so poorly built that relatively few have survived. Even so: They never have (and, frankly, never will) command the kinds of prices that 911s of similar year and similar condition get. And 911 prices have plateaued and may actually be softening a bit.
Amsoil? Is it on sale? Because that's what I'm buying.

I don't know where you are looking Shawn, but it has been a long time since you could find running sub $5K sharks. And while the odd deal may still be out there by someone who doesn't know what they have, you certainly aren't finding them "all day". The new norm is double that for a crappy 928 that runs, but has lots of needs.

Hi Nate - I thought so too. The car looks very good ... Im tempted to go get it, but Im thinning the herd now. The leather work does look good. Pod wraps can be tricky, particularly around the ***** ... this one looks pretty nice as well as the seats. He spent some money on the interior. If the paint is original and still good (or a paint correction away from being good), this could be a really nice S4 at a bargain price. Spend a weekend doing the TB/WP and drive! Hope you and the fam are doing well.

It does look nice for the price! Needs a TB/WP asap.....most likely oil pan gasket plus motor mounts and valve cover gaskets.....bummer no under hood photos.....without records it could need lots of little things like plugs-wires-cap-rotor...intake refresh (flappy) new fuel lines etc...it is missing the belly pan but does have a nice looking airdam......
