Congrats @Rob Edwards. I was hoping for an even higher number despite her needs, but I’m 100% biased since a strong early car market is good for me.

I've been involved in three complete '78 restorations in a row in the last 4 years. If you value your labor time at zero, to take the body to the shell, the motor to the shortblock and the interior completely out, you'll spend 25-30K- 10K for paint (without any reassembly,) and $15-20K for parts and parts reconditioning. And that's if everything is there and you don't count the cost of all the stuff (tools, consumables, parts washer maintenance, etc) it takes to be a home-gamer. I was bummed that the #241 that William and I did last year didn't sell at the Gooding auction this summer (https://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1978-porsche-928), that would have been a great comp for the value proposition on a completely restored '78., figuring 10-20K for the car, 25-30K for parts and paint, and XX K for labor if you're not doing it yourself. One thing you cannot underestimate is the difference in time and effort between making it a 90 point car vs. a 98 point car, that curve goes exponential at its end. #241 was 30-40 hours a week for 7 months. Spousal approval factor hit a new low.....

Following on Rob’s point about 90 to 98 point diminishing returns, a pebble beach lawn quality restoration takes insane times. 4,000-5,000 hours assuming you don’t need to recreate parts.

The black one comes with a detailed backstory as an option.

The red one is very clean in and out - no rub strips. Seller seems very responsive. Probably too late to get a crank end play measurement done, but one could ask, and I'd rather see the OEM radio; neither issue would stop me from bidding.

SOLD! Much Thanks to everyone.

[QUOTE=928 DesMoines;16911072]Friends, once again, my employers are moving me along. I've been having fun with my 1989 S4 hoopty parts car that I bought last year. I originally bought it as a parts car for a specific purpose; but my kids convinced me to go the other way with it for a while. Had fun using it as my daily, but I'm out of time on this one; so finally pulled the motor last week for its original purpose (the motor). Stone Gray Metallic. The PO scuffed up the paint on the front for some sort of paint prep, but it is original paint. The PO also had the interior (not to my taste really) re-done so is complete.

Anyway, minus the engine, I am selling the rest of the car. Here is the catch: If you want parts, you must buy the complete car.

I am not too far from Frenzy (like 100 miles) ; but alas, I can't make it there as I am spending time with my daughter at her college graduation ceremony (It was originally covid postponed). However, if you are attending Frenzy and want to come see/buy the car just PM me and we can work something out. I would like to have this car gone before I am transferred so that my wife doesn't have to deal with it while i'm travelling away. So again, I'm not parting out the car as I am out of time for that sort of thing; but PM me with offers for the complete car (minus the engine of course).

No restored car is going to get much better than this...

Surprised that it did not get further up in the numbers. If I had been aware of the auction I would have stepped up for a few more $$$'s

But that was before I became aware of the temporary softness of the 928 market. It will not last all that long with the incredible amount of dollars being printed.

You really can not pay too much for a car like this, you can only buy too soon!

Thanks for rescuing this one from the jaws of a stagnant restorer..

The gentleman that bought it will be putting in a motor.

He’s an enthusiast that currently owns a GTS among two others. Great guy.
