928s for Sale

No, not me. It went way beyond my target price. I'm probably not qualified to buy in an auction format, especially without being able to get an inspection.
Did you see it sold for $16.8K in Dec 2016? He did well; probably made his maintenance costs back.

Yup, but without knowing the actual mileage and the surface currosion under the hood, limited maintenance records etc., you were lucky to stay away. All in all, good for us Sharksters!

1978 #241 auction at Gooding Geared Online 2020 (https://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1978-porsche-928/ ) Reserve not met at $83K + 10% buyer's fee. (Screengrab is at $82K with 3 minutes to go, wasn't sure whether they'd show the high bid if RNM. They didn't/don't, nor any bidding history)

Ed-
Good question- On the one hand it's exciting that Gooding was willing to accept it as a lot for one of their auctions, but for most of the week their 'headline' picture of the car made it look like the paint on the passenger door didn't match the fender (I spent some time on various FB group pages trying to convince people it was an artifact of the photography), which can't have helped with the initial impression of the car. We got that fixed by yesterday. And while Gooding wisely copied the last-2-minute-no-snipe bid format of BAT, there was no indication whatsoever of how many bidders were involved, and no peanut gallery just made it kind of blah. Goes to show you A) how good the BAT format is, and B) how we've all become accustomed to it.
I'm happy with it reaching $83K, obviously the owner wanted more. I think the $110K reserve was too high and the result supports that, but I have no association with the sale so I don't really care that much. Since the car was here someone wiped all the ink off several of my homemade stickers and replaced them with less correct ones, but I'm probably the only person bothered by it.

The auction houses reserve the right to bid on it until it reaches the bid before the reserve. So often they will bid it up themselves until it gets there, or stop if they think it’s futile.
Consequently we have no idea that there were any real bidders at all.
I’m skeptical that here were real bidders at the end.
So I wouldn’t use that as a comp.

Throwing this out there to see if there would be any interest. It's taken me over a year to get to this point of putting it up for sale, and believe me it's not been an easy decision. I have meet a lot of you guys over the years so you know that this isn't the easiest thing to do and some of you know my car pretty well. It would be nice to see someone from this group take the reins with this car and get it to the next level.
1981 Porsche 928, $16.000 117k miles, automatic transmission, Non sunroof car, Single drivers side mirror car, A/c converted to 134a blows cold, AM/FM Bluetooth hidden stereo, original non functioning stereo in console for factory look. This car is in great shape , Paint shows it's age but is still in good shape. I have driven this car on long road trips with no issues. Interior is in beautiful shape, power front seats work, no rips or tears. No cracks in dash or instrument pod. Everything works on the car, power windows, cruise control, power door locks, Power mirror. This is a great early Porsche 928 that has been enjoyed by my family for 33 years.
As with any classic this is an on going project as a 39 year old car truly is. With that being said the reason I'm selling this family car is I have been working on this car for well over 25 years and been restoring it for the last 12 years. The parts list is long and countless hrs spent getting it to this point. Approximately a year ago I discovered a small coolant leak that collects on top just forward of the bellhousing, not much, about a tablespoon and this only happens when under hard acceleration otherwise under normal driving it stays dry. The coolant issue doesn't have to be addressed at this time, I feel that the degree of leak is what I would say (the juice just isn't worth the squeeze). To small of a leak to justify the amount of work to correct it. As of late I have had a hard time with the desire to continue on and I feel that maybe it's time to part ways with this special car.
If you're really interested in owning a solid 928 and have the desire to work on one of these cars, this is a great car to do that with. This 928 is much more than just a running car. A majority of the issues that effect old 928's have already been addressed. You won't be disappointed in this car. This 928 is really a fantastic car that is in wonderful shape and absolute a joy to drive. I am more than happy to talk about this car to any serious buyer.
Oil changes were done with Mobil 1 since 22k original miles, since we purchased the car back in September 1987. I have performed all maintenance per Porsche 928 shop manuals. I also worked as a Porsche technician at an Independent Porsche repair shop in Massachusetts in the mid 90s for 4 years. This is where I learned my cool hobby.

4) Replaced front drivers and passenger seats out of a 1983 model 928( upgraded to power units) No rips or tears
5) Replaced window switches
6) Installed hidden stereo, Original is just Faux unit but is the correct model for the car.
7) Reinforced door pockets with steel bracket from 928sRus
8) Replaced odometer gear( common failure on 928s) mileage is correct
The part vendors I use are 928 International, Pelican Parts, 928sRus, 928 Motorsports and of course the occasional e-bay purchase. If you would like to see some videos of this car I have a YouTube channel called 4.5 liter garage. Please like, share and subscribe LOL. If interested leave me a message.
It’s a nice car that’s cared for by a meticulous owner.

That dent will come out for a couple thousand. Nice color, nice interior. (Although I hate the red spider.) If I was in the country I'd give it serious thought. Hell, I might reach out to him anyway and see if he can sit on it until I get back.
