Hey guys, I have a white 1978 928 Porsche that I am selling. I have had it on Facebook garage sale since August with a handful of people interested. I have it listed at 8500$. Is this a fair # for this vehicle? It has rust around the windows but the body is solid the interior carpets are in bad shape and the leather seats have some tears in it. This is definitely a car that needs a lot of work to get it looking as it should. The timing belt was replaced 3 years ago and it does run. I have not driven it on the road since last summer but I had it running a month ago. It is all original except for the radio with paperwork. Any info would be great, just want to make sure I am getting what it is worth as I know this is a rare vehicle.

I can respect that. I am going to pay now for the membership. This was the plan all along but I was looking for some insight from Porsche enthusiasts on what it would be worth. I have done a good bit of research but I have found it hard to find info on this subject. It is especially hard to find a 78 for sale to compare.

 

I have paid for the membership, and plan to add it to the classified section but like I said any comments/info on what you think this car is worth would be appreciated.

Need more info to assess. What is the mileage? How well does it run when it runs?

As a baseline, your $8500 ask seems reasonable assuming the miles aren't crazy, and it starts, runs and stops. The interior is desirable, but you really, really need to clean it up - it shows dirty - a good shampoo on those carpets and clean the seats. Also, that cork should be scrubbed with a mild detergent (it is vinyl - not leather). This includes the cork vinyl on the seats, dash, the black pod, the rear quarters, the A and B pillars, etc - everything - scrub it up nice. Also, clean all the crap out of it. Wipe down the exterior, and use something to remove the rust stains from the paint, where is runs down. You may be able to clean it up a bit that way. These things are all no cost but make a huge difference.

Then take it somewhere nice, without background distractions, and take lots of pictures. Including the engine bay - be sure you clean that up too. A dirty car screams negligent care. Also, never post pictures of it with the mirrors twisted in like the driver's side mirror is in your photos - these little things make it look tired and neglected, and send the message that you don't like it well enough to care about it, so why would anybody else. Do all those things and get it running good - by drivi9ng it some to clean out that CIS and any old gas. Outline what works and what doesn't work, then list it . Pull the for sale ads until you do these other things. This car could be worth more than $8500 once you clean it up and see that it is running decently.

 

I agree with the other posters. Cork on white in a nice combo, but even though it is a little rough, it could still show much better. At least wipe down the interior and motor compartment with a damp terry towel. Give the carpets a vacuum and hit with rattle can carpet cleaner where necessary. Even though it is probably looking at a repaint it would still be more attractive with a little shine on the paint if that is possible. The rust is the major problem with the car, and you cannot fix that, but the streaks below the rust really accent it. Bar keepers friend will take them right off. Document how it starts runs and shifts. Show any documentation you have. You want to show that it is a good starting point for a project and not a basket case. Personally, I think basket case projects are wonderful, but the price point for getting started has to be much much lower. If you want to get artsy move the jeep, sweep under the car, and park it at an angle so it looks like it is being shown rather than just parked and left. A wise buyer would want photos from under. Hopefully the rust on the bottom is not as bad as it is on the top.

My goodness - it doesn't matter what the seats looks like under those covers - that car is a screaming bargain if it looks anything like that in person! Wow! Based on the door cards, they are probably vinyl, like my spare seats. Somebody here needs to grab this!
