Had some free time to day so did a few things that have been on my list for too long:

- Installed (again) new outside passenger side window seal. Had issues with it staying in place so the last time I put the old one back in.. This time it is in for good..
- Fixed a few cracks in the door card while I was at it and cleaned it top to bottom.
- Fixed the vapor barrier, old adhesive had dried out.
- Reconnected my ARM1 to the new O2 sensor. Still like that thing :-)
- General cleaning under the hood.
- Changed the oil
- Topped off other fluids.

Felt good to get away from work and get some 928 stuff done.

Man I love this car!

 

Finally got around to giving the engine a once over and found out a rat had chewed through a vacuum line causing my drop in fuel economy ~2 mpg.

Of course it's one of the lines under the intake so that'll need to come off again

But hey, at least this time I have another car to drive so I can give the old 89 a proper top end refresh.... and a fresh set of head gaskets

 

Gave the MAF pot about a 1/2 turn counter clockwise to lean it out and it made a huge difference...hit that baby in 4th gear at 70 and she'll swing past 100 like it isn't even there.......

adjusted idle bypass screw to smooth out lower speed driving...in 2nd or 3rd with the throttle barely touched it can hesitate slightly sometimes, resulting in minor hitching...if it was an auto would never know...the idle bypass screw is so sensitive in my car...all it takes is 1/8 of a turn from correct in either direction and it will have difficulty running at lower rpms in low gears smoothly...it definitely has its "happy place" and it appears to be independent of the MAF rich/lean setting...10 years and I'm still learning how to make the car run better...I made a tool to get to the idle bypass screw and I literally keep it in the car.....

stupid coolant light is on again...when I changed out the reservoir for Carl's aluminum unit the connector on top got janky and won't stay on there firm enough...I've cleaned it ...tried to bend the metal tabs a little so it sits tighter...it'll work for a while then one day it will start going off again...I dare not try to change the end of the wire...who knows where I would ever find another little connector like that.....I'm on the verge of ordering a whole new sensor but it works fine...just the stupid connection at the top.

 

Replaced 88 and 89 S4 brake booster check valves. For the 89 I used the early pieces.

Oil change on the newly rescued '87. Couldn't get any VR1 20W50 local, so I used a Liqui Moly 20W50 with some whatever friction reducing formula...boy was I surprised when I poured that stuff. It looks silver, with all kinds of sheen in it almost like there is a mess of metal shavings all through it. Talked with a couple 951 guys that been using it for some time and it really is "normal" to look that way. They had good things to say about it so far. Still added a shot of ZDDP additive though.

Ripped out the K&N filter and replaced with a stock filter. Replaced the rear speakers with some nice sounding Blaupunkt units and kept hunting down the shutting off issue. Pretty sure it's a CPS issue. We'll see.

 

New radiator cap and battery ground strap. Not sure when I installed the previous strap...sometime in the last 5 or 7 years ish....the new one made a nice improvement in driveability for sure. Throttle nice and smooth and precise again...it was starting to feel "choppy"....like you'd touch the gas and it would jump or something instead of a nice smooth transition...now its super nice and smooth again. Engine running smoother too!

it's 86 degrees and humid here so waiting till around 7:30 or so when it cools off and am going to go for a run.

Strongly encourage those of you that can't remember when you last replaced your battery ground strap think about doing so; I sure never would have predicted it would make the difference it did. Thinking now to put it on a schedule for replacement every 5 to 7 years or something; regardless of what it looks like. Always surprised how sensitive these cars are to circuit quality. Cleaning a few grounds and having fresh ground straps front and back make such a difference.

 

New WR5DC's, gapped to a proper .8mm and a new MAF from JDS!....just did a buck o' five like it was sitting still.....running about 340ish ohms...or around there...just in time for the fun run to Excelsior Springs this Saturday...

I've been waiting since I brought this car home (05/08/2011) to post here and say that I was finally able to take my 86.5 for a cruise. I still have some bugs to workout. It has a slight intermittent miss at idle. I still have plenty of things I need to do to it, but an actual drive sure was fun. I've missed driving one for a long time.

 

Yesterday I visited my baby. She's been stuck in the workshop for 5 weeks due to a covid lockdown, halfway though the intake refresh. She looks to be in good company though.

Got my cam covers back from being re-coated, so today I'm applying decals. Loving how it looks!

 

Finally installed new hood liner and decal.

 

Out with the old, in with the new. I kind of forgot how annoying this job was....
