Got the bi-annual BS smog check done today. Passed with flying colors. All readings far below the avg result. I like how the "profile" for the 928 is "High Emitter."

Then the guy who ran the test comes by and says: "So, you had that thing up to 150 yet?" I said, "yeah on the way here."

Geeked-out at Greg Brown's shop today and got a few issues taken care of (what a great guy Greg is!!!). Visited 928 International. Had the car washed and wased, and had a fine French dinner with a good friend who happens to own a 928 GTS.

What a day!!!

Took my car for dyno testing to get a baseline and see if it really was running well...

Max power = 260.2
Max torque = 272.2

23 years later and stills pulls like the day it left the factory. I like that!

Yup Jim! Digging into it would be putting it lightly! My S4 only had 37k miles when I got it, have added around 1500 more since then. Decided to get a low mileage very sorted out one and pay (what some may say) a higher price instead of one which required work. First time since selling the '06 Carerra had a car to work on so have been very much enjoying wrenching again! Most of the stuff I have done so far has been because I WANTED to do as compared to HAD TO do. Only real had to do item thus far has been the clutch master and slave cylinders...

In about a month plan on installing the powdercoated intake and valve covers, etc. Still looking for someone to swap out 1989+ MY calipers so I can get them powdercoated...

Maybe I'll get to work on the other side tomorrow. It's supposed to be easier-- maybe I'll only have to do it a couple times. That would definitely be 'easier'.

I love this car. I LOVE this car. I love THIS car. I love this CAR. --I-- love this car. Did I sound at all convincing??? Figgered as much.
3X? The passenger side has good room IF you take the engine hoist bracket off. Same on the DS also.

The brackets were all removed so it wasn't painful, but I was pretty stupid leaving the sponges in. That's after the recent discussion on work habits and the example of the flags one poster shared about pulling the sponges on exactly this job. With the brackets out of the way the cover comes off relatively easily. Fuel return line goes back, rear bracket goes back with the air valve, harness and ground wire get bolted back in place this morning, and the pass side is done. Driver's side today should be a breeze after all the passenger side learnings.

I used wire ties on the corner cover bolt holes to keep the gasket in place. That worked great. But I also put a film of Hylomar in the plug tube seals to the covers, and that made them just slippery enough want to slither off. I don't yet have a good solution to that problem. So when it went back on the last time, I used a little angle probe down into the tube to verify that each seal was still in its proper position before I snugged the bolts. Attempt #2 had one of the rings partially obstructing access for one of the bolts, fortunately, or I wouldn't have known until the plug well overflowed witth oil. This is a learning experience for me, as are most 928 projects.

Completed steering wheel replacement. I wish every job was this easy. I did need to buy a 27mm socket for $3.84 which also makes this job one of the cheapest. On to the TT, PKlamp and Porkentioner...

81 Auto.
Completed the rewire of the 14 pin harness - all new wires, all new FI hoses, vacuum lines etc, plus new radiator and auto trans lines, etc.
Then spent an hour trying to find out where a smell of gasoline around the back left of the engine was coming from - turns out I was sniffing the open end of the line from the charcoal canister to the air box!

Neil,

That is good to know... My EURO GTS has a raw fuel smell at the back of the car while running (only). My S4 has the same but at the front (mostly passenger side) both point towards charcoal canister/return line issues. It was not a problem or a bother in the winter, but with the warmer weather and greater volitility of fuel as temp rises it is now a GREAT BOTHER and more than a bit scary actually! Time to get them fixed!

Continued application of Leatherique Rejuvenating Oil to front seats - previously cardboard-like passenger lower cushion is becoming much more flexible:

James, that is why I like to post and read this sort of trivia; sometimes it helps me, other times it helps others. That is what the B-Boards should be all about :-)
