Drove it around in the heat. When I did the grill repair over the weekend, I cleaned the contacts for the electric fan and BINGO! Today the dang thing works for the first time since I've own this beast. When it first came on, I was thinking "Oh F$#*, WHAT IS THAT?" The needle never strayed much past the half way mark in 90 degree heat. Gotta love the free fixes!!!

I wanted to start all the cars (except for the Schwartz) I found that the Stepson would not crank or turn over. The battery was already charged, so I started running down power. Jump start terminal had >12 volts. Jacked up the car, set the jackstands and crawled under to check wires at the starter. Those wires were fine. I got out from under the car, and this voice started going off in my head,
"Relay, Relay, Relay"

So, I got the spare 253B relay out of the glove box, and replaced the starter relay.

The Stepson roared to life. Man, I love this car!

I see you had a couple of speedtervreplica's. Now you have a real one. How do they compare in the driving? I was hoping to do a speedster replica build as a next project. Are they any good?

Actually all 3 have been replicas. As to being any good? I guess that depends on what you are looking for. In my case I have had a 100hp motor in one, 160 hp motor in another, and a 220 hp motor in the Spyder and is now in the 3rd replica Speedster. 220 hp in a 1400 pound car is pretty interesting. Traction is a bit of a problem as there is not enough space under the fenders (non widebody style) to fit any larger tires than about 195's. Handling is based on 1937 design by F. Porsche, so by todays standards it is a bit primative. It can be improved on considerably, this basic design has been raced by 10's of thousands of racers over the last 60 years, and Speedsters, and current replicas can still be very competitve when well set up. But, they will not out corner a Miata...but then there is the straight away....and that is a very different story. With a rolling start I am under 4 seconds 0-60, another 4 seconds will take you to 100 mph, and 4 more to 125mph, where I let off the throttle, the areodynamics are not good over that speed. I did have the Spyder up to 140 once, not going there again.....no steering....the cars are noisy, impossible to seal up regarding rain, rough riding, tight, lacking in most all creature comforts, but just about the most fun you can have in a vertical position.....more hp is better in my mind....but I like to enjoy the car.....and hp is what does it for me.

Well, for me the steering and oversteer character is what it's all about. And off course the looks. I still have my old '76 beetle that must either be restored or destroyed or transformed into a speedster. I have a couple of engines at hand that could serve as a base for a mildly tuned engine. A 2 liter type 4 VW and a Porsche 4cyl 1700 cc ex-waterpump engine. This one will need another camshaft and flywheel and carbs.

Regards your old Beetle, that is a great starting point if and only if the car has a ball joint front end. Some of the VW's of that period may be "Super Beetles" with front struts...they require a front end transplant to work for a Speedster replica. Also, I know in your area of the world a model 1302 was produced, is that what you have? Here a '74 would have IRS rear suspention, which results in a better handling Speedster, but less original than a swing axle rear suspension. Either is fine, I prefer the IRS, although my current car is swing axle....

There are some online builds that are very helpful...also www.speedsterowners.com is a great and helpful site for your interest. PM me if you want some other links and the like....and good luck. Speedster replicas are great fun...

Installed a Turbosmart manual boost controller and dead soft aluminum gaskets in the two V-band connection points in the exhaust going to the turbo. Turbo spools even faster now with just a slight boost spike past 7 pounds due to the check valve in the "T" piece before it settles in. The check valve does not allow the wastegate to see boost pressure right away so it stays completly shut longer which allows the turbo to spool up sooner but that is also why there is a slight boost spike.......

Wired up resistor so can have cruise control back after converting third brake light to LED's

Took the day off work and gave her a thorough shampoo and wax! S H I N Y ! Too dark for pictures or would post one... plus my camera skills suck... :P

Having a Shiner Bock now to celebrate and relax. Wife would roll her eyes (she is out for a bit) if she could see me just sitting in the garage, drinking beer and staring at the S4!

Happy and celebrating the end of the suspension work!
Spent a lot of time there but she never drove so well!

What new shocks, ride height and tires can do!!
It's the best job I have done on my car since I bought it.

Went from 150 mm. to 165 mm. in front and from 163 to 173 in th back.

And only 55K miles! Those shocks were realy done!

Thanks to Roger - 928Rus, Mark benton - The Nine Source and Tom from 928 Intl.
for there great help. All this would never have been possible whitout those gentlemens.

Thank you for the parts you provide through this job.
And a big thanks to all Rennlisters who help me through this job.
I would never have done this job whithout you guys.
Thank you very mutch.
