You grind the weld off the shifter and punch out the original pin. You don't actually need to drill out the rod for this mod, the M10 bolt fits just fine. There is no slop because the lever is tightened against the sides of the rod now, not the pin bore.

To quote Spencer's thread:

- M10x50mm bolt- x1
- M10 nylon lock nut matching the bolt above - x1
- M10 thrust bearings - x2 (McMaster 5909K11)
- M10 thrust bearing washers - x4 (McMaster 5909K71)

For the M10x50mm bolt (and locknut), I grabbed one at Lowe's (1.25mm threading IIRC). It turned out that I needed to grind off about 2mm off the end, otherwise it would hit the side of the opening and I couldn't get into 5th

The weld is easy to grind off, and the pin should punch right out when you see a full circle under where the weld was. The M10 bolt fits in nicely.

Interior glue removal after pulling all the carpet and sound deadening.

I think I can still taste the purple.

Today I installed my new starter and reassembled my brake calipers. I accidentally dropped my old starter and broke the solenoid, so I decided to look for an early style large bodied starter to prevent kickback while cranking due to my notched bell housing. I suspect that my old starter was going bad and this new one was only $42 and came with a brand new solenoid.

Broken old starter:

New starter installed:

Where does the third wire going to the starter go? This new one has two possible locations unlike my old one that had only one spot for it. Here's a picture of the two possible locations (they're off to the left):

My brake calipers turned out pretty good. The paint got kinda beat up during reassembly, so I'll have to touch it up:

Yes, I know my garage floor is filthy...

Looks good. Now you are motivating me to see how my new ones would look in the car.

Default New vacuum lines

In another effort to chase down a stumbling acceleration problem, replaced vacuum lines with Lindsey silicone lines. Lightning hit across the street while I was working in the garage. Time to change my shorts.

I installed the Only944 shifter last week, tightened up the slop a little. Also did the linear/round throttle cam last week.

Went under the car last night to look at the shift arm and short shift linkage and ended up taking that apart and tossing the new short shift and linkage in. Took her for a drive to the local watering hole for one and went back home, sadly she didn't want to start this morning when I left for work or I would have driven it today, it was very dewie this morning so wondering if the distributer cap is an issue here otherwise I am thinking fuel, may try and check that out a little tonight.

Thinking a little clean up around the trans and some new fluid is in order and she will be shifting as well as you could expect from a nearly 30 year old car.

Took my big sister for a ride down some gravelly roads, Rally style. She was a good sport and only screamed when I got the car almost totally sideways. Even after owning a 944 for over 4 years, it still never ceases to amaze me just how controllable they are at the limit. Good times!
