I still want a set of Z221's but as i've had a set back on a second set of wheels whats the view on running the Hankooks as a do-it-all? My only fear is wet weather performance. Are there other tires that give good track performance which can also be used if caught in Auckland weather?

I've done it and wouldn't again. The Z221 is too track focused for daily driving and a compromise road/track tyre is a compromise.

Given its only a fair weather weekend / track car and not a DD i don't mind the noise, etc. My only fear is getting caught in an impromptu rain storm

Warwick for your usage they should be fine. Ive used them that way as I currently have one set of wheels only for the 993. They work fine in the wet at John will tell you, we have both driven a fair bit in the rain n the street with these tyres. They are treadwear 80 and with an aggressive track camber (anything over -1.5) you will find they wear quickly. That said I got 4-5 track days and 2500 road km out of my set last year in South Island.

I've only had one scare on the road driving Z221s. That was on the way back from HD on underinflated tyres and a rain storm filled the road ruts. It was also skittish on the occasional rivers that run across the motorway.

Pros of Z221 - possibly the best priced competitive dry and damp track tyre out there for the 964 sizes.

Negatives of using Z221 as road tyre: noise, particularly when new, short life of ~ 6,000 km, construction is light so less resistant to nails etc and potholes, tyres wear on the shoulders at HD, making them harder to keep WOFable and they flick up stones etc at following cars.

You don't need anything pretty for track wheels. Is there nothing out there at all?

the problem with using these type of tyre for DD is that most of the time it's fine and you get a bit casual and then it can catch you off guard. like getting over a little river on a corner can sledge you into the oncoming lane. for me its not worth the risk. I have used similar tyres - Dunlop 03G mostly - over 9 years of Targa and feel ok racing in the wet on them but the fact is you are on high alert, have a co-driver with eyes peeled for standing water as well. In DD conditions this is not the case and I have been caught unexpectedly once on a touring stage driving Wgtn to AKL for the start of Targa. Not speeding but hit some standing water and wasn't paying attention quick enough. no accident but a bit lucky

have never driven in heavy heavy rain on them but been in the rain at HD and they were great, plus a wet track they are great.

They are bloody noisy as John said when on the road, and any kind of loose stones will be picked up in them.

I run them as an all round - but I dont drive my car to work, weekends only really and probably every second/third weekend if we are being honest with each other

Sounds about the same usage as Mr Black gets, Nate. Nice to see you are part of the 964 group on the 12th. No wait, the non-GT3 group or what ever its called

Just realised i wasted my 911th post in another forum, doh!

From the owner... "The 930. Rebuilt engine etc. Only 3 nz owners since coming from UK in 1986. She is a 3.3 1983 Red burgundy leather interior with white piping . Very 80s. Not a daily driver as that 4 speed box is so tall but on the open road a screamer.
