Bump the compression through the roof and 100 Octane. Aussies love doing this and this is how they make the big hp numbers from what seems impossible (i.e. 270 hp C3's with CIS, when they are 200hp stock). I did a day trip to Aussie to see a guy who had one of these cars.
I was severely temped to buy a racing 2.9 MFI engine for my car. It could be made to run on 98 Octane, but really needed 100 octane. I wimped out due to the logistics when driving to Matamata and realising I couldn't find 98 pump gas, so got worried about ever doing a Targa tour unless I have a follow vehicle with 100 Octane for the tour!

With regards the Targa Tour we stopped off twice a day at pre designated 98 pumps. These were mapped into the route form day 1 and so we never had to top up with an ethonol blend or anything lower than "98" (actually crap quality 97 min octane as its mostly is in NZ these days) which was much relief especially for the guys with modified engines...

Macca, may I please ask what seats you are running in your car?
I'm interested in trying to retain something of a factory road car look, with the sliding mechanism but looking period correct for my 1990 952 which has a black leather interior.
This has me looking at the Pole Position in leather but they're not cheap (almost twice the price of the Perlon version) & I'm undecided about ABE v FIA.
Those Composite Worx buckets look great & are about half the price of leather PP's but I agree that they're unsuited to late '80's early '90's P-cars & are definitely more at home in an Exige or a stripped out racer. I don't think the Composite Worx seats would be great for long road trips!

Thanks for the info Macca. The Porscheshop has their own brand, EuroCupGT, which are carbo seats available in leather for around half the price of leather PPs:

They have a silver (aluminium?) section for the shoulder straps rather than being completely black which I think makes them look a little tacky.
I think I saw somewhere that the ABEs are not FIA approved but by the same token the FIA seats are not TUV/ABE approved & are therefore not strictly speaking road legal. Not that I've ever heard of anyone being penalised for using FIA-approved seats/belts on the road.

That RSR build is definitely a car to consider. I have looked at it on the internet on and off for a while. Pretty close to full competition car though road reg. Can't imagine driving it to work. But at that ask and a deal to be had its good value. can't build it for anywhere near that price.
I reckon what we need is Sponsorship to run cars like that!!
May be the better deal is also the smaller motor? Need to check rules but a car like that needs to be able to run in Historic events to get the best use and most fun. Like in Europe?

Tim. I think you are right. The ABE isn't FIA. Seems a bit pointless to make them one but not the other!
The UK copy 997 race buckets do look tacky.
Here are some pictures from my supplier of their SP1 and SP5 seats. The SP1 is in a 964 driven in Singapore by a 6'4" dutch guy and he manages just fine. Maybe you should consider something like this. You could land black leather ones in the uk for around 800 gbp the pair with all the hardware!

From my limited understanding, single plug max on old motor is 10.1.1 on 95 pump, 10.5 on 98 pump and an engine rebuild every few years. Twin Plugging - the sky and your budget is the limit.

Yes - easy - give Jon Warring a chq for $35K and a good donor SC engine or C3/3.0T case (if you can find one).
You will get PMO (or MFI if you can find all the bits - better add another $10K), 3.2 short stroke, twin plug, EFI, and compression of around 10.5. Jon has built a few of these motors. I have seen a copy of this motor build by Jon in the flesh and was told by the owner he dynoed at 275hp. The engine is currently in a 69T with broken head stud.

Thanks for posting those pictures Macca. Those seats look sweet, fully carbon (the PPs are GRP & the carbon PPs cost twice as much again for a 2.5 kg saving per seat!), black leather all over - nothing ostentatious or tasteless.
It's easy to lose your shirt on seats! ...but then they're kinda important - beats an apple crate!

With money anything is possible! The factory got 99.79 bhp/litre out of that capacity back in 1974 with the 2.8RSR so given improvements in ignition and experience in engine building techniques I cant see why a 280 bhp 2.8 MFI isnt possible and Im pretty sure they are being built. Compression was only 10.3 for the 2.8 RSR. I assume it was twin plug. They got to 110 bhp/litre for 3.0 RSR which is incredible even in modern times. Both these engines were lifed between 40-60 race hours and of course back in the day ran on 100+ octane leaded. Ive seen the ex Hamiltons one in Oz running and it runs like a hairy dog anything less than 3500 rpm so not a street car (cams).
However with modern engine management, some PMOs or similar ITBs and some other modern accouterments I dont think it would be a stretch. With a strong bottom end youd have it revving to 8000 rpm. But IMHO to build such an engine properly with tuning for the road would be a 40k usd+ job and Im not sure there's anyone in NZ that could do it properly...
