Mine has a pen in the slots.....

I have also used MA carbon to replace my cupholder trim. I kept the core from mine and will prob work on trying to reattach it so I have a spare. As with EM, I had a great experience with MA.

Is MA Carbon the same company as MA Shaw (is/was)? Asking because I had fitment issues on parts for a 993 from MA Shaw

I see that extra space and it looks intentional.

I know a few guys who went to automotive design school and they told me that when they get a job designing vehicle, they are tasked with one part of the car. Imaging a group is responsible for frunk tool designs and another group is tasked with glovebox design. Mistake gets overlooked and off to production it goes. LOL

No, different companies. All the parts I have seen from MA Shaw were terrible. The parts i have had from MACarbon were better quality than the factory parts.

I figured it out. That extra space if for your finger to dislodge the pen from the clips.
