Nice to see some details finally emerging. Not regretting my NMAuto Kit given the details. But a plug and play solution that will be an easy install is a huge win. Will be interesting to see in 5 years what they do the 997.2 PCCM...
997.2 PCCM wish list
  • Car play(wired/wireless doesn't matter)
  • Back up camera support
  • Better display(higher resolution)
  • Integrated with OEM functionally(music/call information on cluster)
Simple as that.

Yes, and no slight on the NM Auto Kit...I was thinking about going that route, too. Having Anthony drive up to Vermont for the install on his Northeast Trip was a huge plus, as was the fact that @Wayne Smith had it installed, as I greatly respect his opinion.

The only thing I'll miss with a PCCM unit is a higher resolution screen. Sure, that would be nice, but it's not worth waiting 3-5 years for, and I am not certain they'll get the unit 'right' based upon what some are hearing. We'll see, though.

@VT Blue Was it extra for Anthony to drive to you and do the install? Sounds like it would be a hefty price tag, but I would want the back up cam installed along with the 9xx unit. 9xx unit doesn’t seem too bad to DIY, but add in a back up cam and it seems like a much harder install.

My audi has wireless android auto and Apple car play and it's so much more convenient than having to plug in.
That car also has wireless charging, so that's an important detail. But i rarely charge in the car, its more for my passengers and they can "plug in" to the USB ports to charge if needed.
I also have 2 phones- 1 for work and 1 personal, I just use the work phone to play music or navigate in the car, because of the unlimited data. I hardly ever need to charge it, especially on short drives.
if it was a long road trip? Maybe, but i can also just charge when I get to the destination.

Typically my phone is charged when I get in the car. It’s pretty nice to hop in the car and have automatically connect. I can plug in address on maps in the house and it automatically pops up on the nav. My SUV does not have wireless Carplay and I definitely prefer wireless. Once you have it you’ll understand.

Routing the cable from the right rear taillight to inside the car at the lower right of the rear window is easier with two people. A loooong drill bit to carefully penetrate the rubber gaskets is needed. And a good snake. Yanking the trim from under the rear window sucks. But it is all doable. Running the cable inside the cabin is pretty easy.

I thought I was OK without the back up camera for all these years. But having it is a nice luxury and I'm glad I added it. Flame away you purists!!!

I've installed the 9xx as well as the NM units now. Similar but not exact. It's only difficult the first time you do it!!!

I thought about why they kept the resolution the same, perhaps this is the "classic" part of the name where they keep the physical buttons and screen resolution for nostalgia...

Sorry for the delayed response, @GT2RSobsessed.

Yes, there was an additional fee for Anthony to come here -- he fit me in on a swing through the northeast he had already planned. However, that fee was worth every penny and I did not find it onerous. Having Anthony here to do the install, deal with anything that may come up (if it does) was the peace of mind that I expected and received. He is a perfectionist and highly skilled -- exactly the type of person I want working on my car. I'd rather pay a bit more upfront to have the job done right the first time, and I absolutely feel that I received full value and then some.

I know I owe a thread on my experience, and I will get to it, but I think you'd not only appreciate having Anthony there to ensure all goes well, but have some fun learning, too. I am not exactly mechanically gifted, so I learned a lot. I cannot recommend the 9XX Experience enough (and it is an 'experience').

Also, as @Wayne Smith said, having the backup camera is sooooo nice. I thought I was wussing out by adding it, but it adds a dimension that I did not realize how much I would appreciate.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thx!

Bob

The PCCM for 996 came at what would be the end of the 996.2 era's anniversary right (i.e. 15 years after the 996.2)??
So, I do not think Porsche Classic will make the 997.1 part of the program until the last 997.2 hits 15.
Wasn't the end of the 997.2 run 2013?
I am guessing the wait will be at minimum 2023 but if I were going to make a bet, it would be on 2028.
A few more years for you guys to enjoy your back catalog of Dave Matthews bootleg concert CDs.

997.2 did run through 2013 for the 997.2 Turbo.

Since they've already created the user manual and have FCC photos out there, my guess is sometime this year, but we're all guessing at this point.

If you are right, it might be based on the success of the 996 PCCM+ and etc, so Porsche plans to split the 997.1 and 997.2. In that case, I would expect the PCCM+ for the 997.1 to come out in 2023. I know you guys know this but the 15 year limit is pretty standard for something to be considered "classic."
