Also, people bought the other 911s because they were cheap at the time, too. I think the 996 will continue to raise in value until it reaches similar prices to the other earlier cars and then it will level off. The main point is that the 996 will no longer be the “cheap” or entry point 911. It will just be seen as a regular 911 like the others. The purists have hated every single car after the 356 at some point. Good thing for many of us that we are independent thinkers. We now own the 911 with the most unique headlights in the model range, lifted straight from the GT1. That’s the narrative going forward. Fried egg negativity is outdated.
I agree completely. The early 911s did increase, but much of it happened before the Covid surge and 996 drift.

EDIT: the 964 actually took the longest to increase, IIRC. That car was one of the least desirable because the 3.2 G bodies were a ‘perfect’ air-cooled 911 if it weren’t for the most desirable, and last of the air-cooled, 993.

Production of the 991 generation ended on December 20, 2019, with 233,540 units produced.

I seem to remember people saying 996 models will never be worth anything because they made so many of them. They made 33.35% more 991 vs 996. I scoffed at Bitcoin at $5k and watched it go up 10x, so nothing will surprise me as to where 996 prices end up in the next few years. The inflation Genie is very, very hard to get back in the bottle, especially when interest rates are starting off near zero.

Hey that’s what people said about my 88 E30 M3 that I bought on eBay 23 years ago for $3500 and 5 years later my 88 944Turbo S 35k miles for $2800
now I think my car stock market index has been doing well even if I paid $27000 for my 99 glacier white aero with 98k miles
i think there is is enough uniqueness in the 99 to grow on my investment but I think I’m balanced
Mike

I don't see a sales price on this. Do I have to join Copart? The suggested retail is nuts.

Regardless of what happens in the future, that black aero both surprises and doesn't. Prices are up across the board, but I think people are realizing the 996 is just as much 911 as the rest of them. The introduction into the watercooled future that is Porsche. None the less has characteristics of it's own that will never be repeated again (omg the headlights). Drove mine for a solid hour and a half yesterday to C&C with a buddy, have never had a more enjoyable driving experience and feel very fortunate to have bought in when prices were in the gutter. Them days is gone.

What would a nice maintained condition early 4/98 1999 996 with 195k miles sell for? Rebuilt engine, refurbished interior, paint correction and ceramic coating. updated and upgraded suspension.

Good question! Many of the crazy high prices are for relatively low mileage cars - sup 50k mile garage queens. Wonder what the current pricing would look like for a well maintained driver with loads of miles that has been throughly enjoyed and properly maintained.

How many miles on the rebuilt engine? Who did the work? Documented? What maintenance history besides that? Lots go into it though whatever it's worth today is prob 50% more than the same car was worth year+ ago.

so I bought my car in January. 29,000 mile clutch IMs, rms. Now 7,500 mile spark plugs coils, new rotors and pads, new ac lines, new brake lines. All fluids flushed 5,000 miles ago. Car has about $7,000 worth of upgrades, factory 408s, tech art front spoiler, fab speed headers and exhaust , rss motor mounts. Hr springs konis, everything is in working order. I have been offered $25, I have less than $20 on it. Current mileage is 97,000 miles. It’s silver space grey interior. Cdr220 Nokia 6by 40 amp and came with 6 cd changer that is missing. I’m the 4th owner.

People laugh but five years ago I remember making fun of absurd air-cooled prices that are now the norm.

except the garden variety non-Mezger 996 isn't collectible.

1.) The 997 and 991 will be coming down in price as time goes on, so people are going to start comparing 996s to those cars. It will be the same old arguments as before: The SC 3.0 vs 3.2 Carrera vs 964 and ‘which one should I buy?’ will have the same answer as it has always had, ‘buy the newest 911 you can afford.’

2.) People who bought the 996 2-6 years ago did so mostly because they were cheap. Not because it was such a supreme handling car, or unique headlights, or cable throttle, despite owners claiming that’s the reason. No, we bought them despite the headlights and negativity about the interior, because driving a 911 in that price point was almost too good to be true. And for most, it was and still is. For some (major repairs), not so much.

Once the 996 gets to be priced like any other used 911, then any other used 911 becomes the target of ‘passion and desire.’

The argument that the 996 feels vintage compared to ‘sterilized’ newer, modern cars, is the same old argument from the early 911s, up through the 964s, including the 996 - especially the 996 - when it came out.

But make no mistake about it - the Porsche 911 is an amazing machine. The newer the 911, the more incredible and amazing it is. These cars end up being the fastest, more fun and extreme cars on the planet in the most extreme variants.

I wouldn’t sell my 911 for any other car, but I would sell it for a better 911. Better ones could be newer or older, but once the used 911 costs $50k instead of $20k, the air-cooled market opens up, as well as the 997, and not long from now, the 991.
+1
