Imagine the gut punch of listing your very nice manual 996 targa and it sells for $10k under market. I would apologize to the high bidder and let them boot me off the site.

If one makes a deal, they should honor their end of the bargain.

Agreed. I'm sure even the very wealthy are reducing discretionary spending temporarily and they're not even the typical 996 bidder.

How long it takes, and the timing of the listing is completely out of the sellers control.
Since my decision to sell and list the Dow has tanked 15+ %
The feds raised rates for a second time.
Granted some delays were on me, waiting for detail appointment, trying to get photographs in between 10 days of on/off raining, etc.
Even after that it could be 3+ weeks depending on editing of listing.
In recent days I have gained an incredible amount of insight on the process, which I wish I had at the start.
With the fact of no control of start date, and each day the economy seems to be a real rollercoaster, how does that play out for making a sale/purchase like a 911.
You hit it on the head, would that Targa brought $39k or more, just based on the fact the interest rates were raised .75% and the dow flirted with going under 30k in that week.
With a 7 day auction and a low or no reserve, it's like park your 911 on a black square and spin the wheel, then cross your fingers.

I have never been a gambler
no matter what is going to go for whatever a seller is willing to pay. Today I met a guy that paid $15k 3 months ago for an 01 996 with 149k knowing that the car needed work. Then he turned around and sank $16k in the car. Guess what he seemed happy to me. Would I be happy paying $31k for a 149k mile 01 996 no no no. This guy wanted the car and wanted to keep it. To each his own. Don’t buy a car to speculate on it there are a bunch more investments that are more suited for that,

That doesn't sound like a 149K mile car for $31K. I don't know what was done to the car for that $16K, but at least for some components the clock has been reset.

Sellers beware: if you list your car with a low reserve it will probably be stolen in this market

ALL the auction sites now have experienced used car sales managers running their admissions

They will bully you into a reserve that churns and burns your car. If your 911 cannot generate top dollar based on “blue chip” spec, you will likely lose big in this economy listing on auction.

List on classifieds and stand your ground, November 2024, will arrive in a blink of an eye

Agreed. If I sell this summer it will be with a reserve I am 100% comfortable with. Or on the open market.

Nice color. I never get why car listings like this often don’t include a good description of the car including recent maintenance. And what’s up with the clear indicators on the front and rear ambers? What are those ugly black squares on the dashboard? 911 script on the deck lid…

Noticing 996 turbos for mid 50's on Rennlist. What's it cost to refresh a turbo? We know the 996 Carrera is approx 15k. Much less if you are a wrencher, if the necessary stuff hasn't been done. Not including suspension, exhaust, etc.

Seems that the turbo may have moved back to a sweet spot in pricing. Is there a fear developing that there are big costs to the refresh and therefor being priced in currently like the bifurcation developing with the Carrera?

I personally hope so. IMHO, an owner that takes care of their car and has it properly serviced should be rewarded with a higher premium. One that just buys it, drives it for a year and them flips it without doing the necessary service on a 20 year old car should be penalized in sale price.

Sellers beware. Seems the buyers are figuring this out.

All in cost for 996 as an estimated example

Purchase price: $25,000
Engine parts refresh: 15,000
Suspension refresh: 5,000?
Exhaust/Intake/Software refresh: 10,000?
TOTAL. 55,000

What about this example using a turbo?

Seems that cars that arent well sorted and don't have the proper service and refresh should go for less, while those 996s that are well sorted and serviced should go for more.

Let the bifurcation tug of war begin in the markets. I welcome it.
