I'm starting to think that the only people talking about those headlights are the 996 people!
Btw, FL sun shouldn't damage your paint if it's protected properly. Most coatings and protectants that have been around include UV protection and have only gotten better over the years. Trick is you need to use them I've seen 5 year old cars in the north east with completely toast paint.

That has been my experience at a number of car meets, and talking to people about my car. No one cares about the headlights.
A 996 in the flesh is a stunning piece of automotive art. I have encountered ZERO hate for the lights.
Its just non-issue.
I have had people ask about the IMS though, so that is definitely out in the wild.
Same here! I've gotten compliments on the wheels, wondering if they're from Porsche, paint quality and paint matched hard back seats. Never headlights. Candidly, I poke fun at myself saying that the 996 interior with paint matched interior pieces reminds me of the PT Cruiser - the greatest car ever produced but with boring headlights.

There's a kid at a Chic-fil-a by my girl's house that always comes over and chats with me if I show up in the Porsche. He's probably 19 or so if I had to guess and he wanted to know more about our body style because he likes the headlights... "I can't tell the other round light cars apart from one another".

The sun destroyed my flawless blue e325 from Virginia in one year I was incredulous
Never again

I bought a used 325e back then because I couldn't afford the 325i. Good car, but I found it impossible to enjoy the low-rev engine. I think the factory clear on those was crap, because mine peeled off also when I was living in Florida. On an extreme budget back then I had it re-cleared and that actually worked pretty well. I was happy to see the 325e leave, only because of the engine. I replaced it with a Mercedes 190e 2.6 (6-cylinder) which I thought was an absolutely amazing and underappreciated car -- everyone was into the 3-series BMW's and the 190e's were never appreciated. The 2.3 4-cylinder was a dog, but the 2.6 6 was absolutely great. The steering has less feel on the 190e because of the worm & gear steering, but everything else on the 190e I thought was superior to the 3-series. The 190e chassis was so rigid it felt like it was carved out of solid metal. I wasn't really attracted to the 190e Evo (16-valve Cosworth) because I prefer the low-end torque of the 2.6 liter 6.
This picture was posted online yesterday of a parking lot at the Porsche parade. It's kind of a fun "Where's Waldo" picture, as it contains 21 Porsche cars in addition to the blue ones. But what struck me immediately is how aggressive that silver 996 looks in the background.
The same thing happens when I look at my desktop background. Which is a picture of a 996, 997, and 991 GT3. Something about the shape of the 996 headlights makes the car look more aggressive. At first I thought it was just me showing favoritism to the 996, but it is becoming undeniable. There is just something mean about the 996.
My first thought when first seeing the 996 headlights was " Nice aero improvement over the "bug-eye" " !!!! With a sort-of "bug-eye under glass look".........

Funny Skip I recall having the same thought at the time. When Ferrari went from the 355 to the 360 they also did the "headlight under glass" look and then the C5 to C6 Corvette followed suit as well. I thought it was just a sports car trend of the time I had no idea it was controversial until the 997 came out.
