Adrian Streather records: "The 993 had been Porsche's most profitable 911 to date"
Considering the 911 had been a fairly "profitable" car for Porsche since the early 1960's, that's saying something. IE manufacturing Porsches had made the Porsche family wealthy, not poor.
And it is a patent falsehood that the cost-saving JIT modernization was implemented with Type 996. Modernization "saved Porsche" years before 996. In fact, the "JIT" Japanese manufacturing methodology had already been implemented company wide by the end of 964 productionand was fully in place at the start of 993 (which is why 993 had been so "profitable").
Cayenne simply iced that cake

Not quite that simple.
Three different events over 15 years. (1) Porsche was in financial dire straights in the mid to late 90's due to lackluster sales of the 964 and 993. The water cooled Boxter and 996 saved the company up thru the 2000-2002 tech wreck, 9/11 and recession. (2) Porsche hit their payday with the launch of the Cayenne which put them in a position flush with cash right before the Great Financial Crisis, of which they launched a buyout of VW that ended due to Porsche running out of access to financing as the credit markets froze up during the collapse. VW then capitalized on this by taking a larger position in Porsche. It will be years until the true battle between the Porsche family tree is told and understood. Weiderking was a pawn in a family chess game. (3) the emissions drama occurred after the GFC.

If you want to see the historical financials including unit sales by model, google "Porsche AG Annual Report" and you will find historical annual reports going back to 2003 which will provide financials going back to 1994. Weidelking had nothing to do with harming the 996. That was done by members of the Porsche community and media, no different than they harmed the 912, 964, 993, etc.
But as always, cream will rise to the top. And the 996 is rising! Go long the 996.

I'm with you so far, of course
But you lost me there, of course, because Type 996 saw the advent of the most successful Porsche Motorsports factory sponsored racing effort in its history: the 996 GT1 double win at 1998 LeMans!! This feat is unmatched before or since in 911 history. The pinnacle! It had probably cost Porsche at least one billion dollars to win that race. Cash

At the end of the "GT1 LeMan run" Porsche built 22 more of them! You can visit them in The Porsche Museum, or valet-parked outside Monaco casinos. Infinite money. Infinite. And Porsche was just ranked the most profitable automaker yet again for 2021. Infinite.

Many would like to as well, but...
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line
Engines pumping and thumping in time
The green light flashes, the flags go up
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup
They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern
As they speed through the finish, the flags go down
The fans get up and they get out of town
The arena is empty except for one man
Still driving and striving as fast as he can
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns
He's going the distance
He's going for speed...

There's a guy with a GT4 he bought new and has logged 125k on it. At his 100k check up the PCCBs showed just 3% degredation of the pad and rotor material.
sooooo lower unsprung weight, less fade and 100k+ service life?
I'll check that box
