Even so, it's good to see MG selling 996's.

Good point. I just wish some of their 928 examples would come down to earth in price!

Both great cars. It’s not that the 996 is better, but I prefer the older feel to it. Less refined and less digital. But you can’t really go wrong with either car. They are more similar than they are different.
This is really interesting to me. I'm new to Porsches, bought a 996 very recently, but when I look at the 997s I go ooh, ahh, so pretty compared to my duckling 996 targa. Then I drive the car, and I am routinely and pleasantly reminded of just how analog it is. I'm comparing mostly to VERY old and long gone stuff I won't bore folks with, and a 2007 BMW Z4MC stablemate. The zed is a unique and fantastic entity, no doubt, but it never did this: when I first took the targa out for a, uhmm, limit finding experiment? I was surprised by the utter lack of traction nannies. Woohoo! Fortunately the old hands, err, manual traction nannies still had enough alacrity to keep us on the black stuff.

So, now the dilemma. Pretty, more powerful, more optioned 997 -- plus nanny -- or duckling 996 with its lack of nanny. Your post has given me food for thought, thank you very much.

Yeah, you are certainly entitled to being wrong.

You're welcome, but I think you may have arrived at some conclusions that I didn't intend. I didn't feel as though the 997.2 was nannied. Both cars felt largely the same. The 997 had more digital accoutrements, such as buttons for suspension settings, sport mode, PSE buttons, a big navigation screen, bluetooth, etc... The engine is also more powerful and feels a little more refined. The whole car seems a little more refined overall. But, these two cars are very similar in feel aside from what I mentioned. Not exactly the same, but similar. Put it this way... one car is not really more fun than the other as a street car. Reasons to buy one over the other have to do with personal preference on power, styling, whether you have more faith in the 9A1 vs the M96, budget, prestige etc... but I wouldn't put driving experience as a major difference. If you like the 996, you'll enjoy a 997 and vice versa unless you are someone with an axe to grind against a certain generation.

Targa with 101k miles, an accident and 9 owners sold for 28k+ fees, thought it was going to go over 30k for a second there.

How much of a premium should be placed on Color and Mileage?

I like this spec a lot, pretty strong showing for a cab.

997.1 bears the fatal combo of non-serviceable IMSB & highest prevalence of bore scoring. Both defects are irremediable

I've been following a few 997s on BaT recently and I still notice a lot of talk regarding IMS but rarely see anyone mention anything about bore scoring.

I think you are right. Non-serviceable IMSB was a non-starter for me (even though that IMSB is pretty robust), I hadn't factored bore scoring into it, but that makes it a worse prospect. Of course, much of the buying market doesn't know this level of detail, but the more educated they get, the more it will limit values.

I don't agree there is no bottom -- the broad market is likely to remain fairly uneducated about pitfalls and the allure of a inexpensive 911 always has at least a bit of a floor (that has been the 996's domain until recently) -- and the 997 body shape is nicer than the 996 (to my eyes at least) and the 997 interior is typically nicer (depending on options, and individual tastes of course).
