Update:
- Wheel bearings replaced, 3 had worn past the point of use. Vast majority of this task goes to @theprf , I brought him the wheel carriers and he did the bulk of the work. Thank you Aaron.
- Replaced the damaged LCA ball joint - again Aaron came up big here having one on the shelf and giving me great pointers on the install.
- Replaced the worn tie rod
- Reinstalled wheel carriers and suspension, the JRZ's needed to have the front top mount studs pressed out and shifted to the high camber configuration, this was an hour pain in the ***. The strut tower had to be clearanced for the additional camber. Thanks John for the advice on both fronts.
- Installed the new front brake package
- Routed and secured the remote canister lines
- Re-installed rear brakes
I think thats it... Really been grinding since getting the car back from paint, haven't had a night that ended before 11 and the last couple have gone well past mid night. While a task may be easy in and of itself, some components of accomplishing it can really eat away the time, the reconfiguration of the top mount studs and shock tower work both being good examples. What may take me an hour with the car in the air, adding those tasks to getting the coilers installed makes it a 3 hour job.

Will do John - thanks for the suggestion.

You're welcome. The reason I mentioned that is that there is a decent amount of flex in the area of the strut towers and precluding any cracking down the line is always beneficial. I know on heavily tracked cars cracks often appear in the area where the trunk wall attaches at the strut towers which goes to show there is a decent amount of flex there. We ended up reinforcing this area with an additional weld-in gusset and a full strut tower cross brace to beef up this area.
Here is a stress load analysis showing how a sharp corner cut into a material focuses stress in that very location. The more gradual the corner Is, the more spread out the load is across that area. Same principle behind stop drilling..

Car is on the ground and ready for windshield install in the AM - I'm happy. Not all rainbows and unicorns as I butchered the front tow hook install - the only job I have done that I can say I am not happy with - at all. But, car is in a good place to the schedule and damn does it look good back on the ground.

ALL windows in and I would say officially, at first glance, it looks like a car again !
Got the axle nuts all torqued up, that’s kind of an experience. After working til mid night for a week straight, I’m taking the rest of the day off.

Today I:
Installed the cowl, windshield wipers and the outside connections for fire system and master electrical, tested and all good.
Installed rear view mirror
Installed FIA padding on roll cage
Installed the battery tray and battery
Installed roof trim
Finish sealing the front firewall
Completed install of front bumper, had to steal a section from C2 bumper, the turbo bumper does not extend as far beneath the car, I stole the section out of the C2 bumper to bridge the gap to chassis
Added a couple fasteners to the splitter for peace of mind (still not quite at peace)
Changed the engine oil
Changed the gearbox oil
Added water wetter to cooling system
Topped off power steering fluid
Bled the brakes
Dropping the car off tomorrow evening for corner balance and align on Tuesday, after work I'll vacuum it out, give it a quick wash and... that's it ! Actually no, there is one other thing I have to do, have a PSM / ABS error I'd like to track down, have some ideas and hope it's something simple.
Fired the car up to circulate the oil and she is sounding ready to rip, strong oil pressure... all exactly like I left it.
All that work and I took 1 picture... I don't know about you but I DO NOT get tired of seeing those brakes.

The stud kit was one of my first 996 mods.
I hate wheel bolts.
I've used stud kits on all of my German cars since the 80s.
All of my VW racecars (SCCA GT3 VW Scirocco & ITC VW Scirocco) also had them.
I did replace them every year or so with track duty.

Hehe… as I’ve said before, the bolts work ok for me and for the $150 (I’m making this up, really no idea how much the stud conversion and lug nuts cost), I’ll save the money. Plus, the bolts a known QTY on this car, re-torque after 1st session and generally they perfect for the rest of the day.
Granted, if I lost my hanger, I’d be up a creek.

With studs, you always have 5 hangers.
