Lot of progress today, the more it looks like a car, the more motivated I get. I need replacement conn housings for the dash connectors, the grey and blue specifically, if anyone has, let me know and I'll buy them.
Today was a lot of work to only cross 2 items off the list, and I didn't even do one of them !
@theprf was nice enough to continue his major contributions to helping me get this car shredding by installing my fancy kill switch, he came up with a pretty elegant solution if I do say so myself - we have a little detail work to get it 100% but as of now its sufficiently functional to cross off the list. Pretty cool to be able to press a button in the cabin and have the battery disconnected.
I spent all day on the fire suppression system ( @theprf ) again came to my rescue during this process. 1st I mounted the fire bottle to the floor with the anti sub brackets (rip off), I used M8 riv nuts and hardware to mount the brackets, that worked well. Then was time to plumb the lines and fit the nozzles, this ended up being just a ton of work for little progress and took a long, long time. I was about 3 inches short on line to get the last nozzle exactly where I wanted but for now, while I wait for some more line, it will do and all in all, beats a hand held on the roll bar. The electrical for the fire system is really easy so I decided to call it a night and get that, and the garage cleanup done in the AM - I am gassed.
PS - I did not fit the passenger seat, but I did test fit my drivers seat on the passenger side and the bottle will sit partially under the seat and partially under passenger thighs, should be no issue at all for anyone wanting a ride.
No work on the car last night, had to clean the garage. Tonights project - Cut a big *** hole in a perfectly good bumper.
I got it in my head that I wanted the Cartek rain light to be almost flush mounted with the bumper, so I spent a long time with the dremel getting the hole so it sits just right. Now to make a bracket to fix it to the bumper and bobs your uncle, this was the hard part.
Thanks Paul - admittedly, I am building it to hopefully do 1 thing really, really well - everything else has to get in line. I do hope to get a MA inspection sticker though and it's still registered, so....
Rain light is done, I epoxied it in place to fill and gaps and made some very crude brackets, the thing is not going anywhere. Then I pulled all the heat shielding and the rear crash bar out. Lot of room for activities with that stuff gone and I would guess 15LBS off the back of the car, not trivial. Rear tow strap will be mounted to one of the frame rails where the bumper beam used to be. Tomorrow I need to cut the bumper.... again for the tow strap slot and then reinstall it.
Stuff takes a long time, I have been putting in some work but with real life, and me trying to learn on the fly a bit - I am not getting as much done as fast as I would like.
Nice little milestone tonight - a lot of tidy up and.... drumroll..... I'm done under the dash ! No more mock up pics of the switch panel just wedged in, she's in for good. All switches tested and working. Finished install of the following:
Dash switch plate with all switches wired and tested. Used Deutsch connectors for fast removal where it made sense. Completed the wiring for the fire system and continuity test is good.
Got the slot cut in the bumper for the tow strap and finished up the wiring for the rain light. I may revisit the rear bumper later if I have time, with all the heat shielding removed it looks like its pretty much acting as a parachute.
The battery kill switch and the fire system both have buttons to allow responders to trigger from outside the car, I plan to place them in the drivers side cowl. Since I can't put the cowl in until the glass is in, and I can't put the glass in until the roof is on, and the fact that maybe in the future I will want to remove the cowl, I used deutsche connections for both switches and labeled so yours truly does not forget.
