the problem with that line of thinking is that GT cars are not profit drivers for PAG.

profit lands on the P&L not the balance sheet. only at FYE when net profits are finalized ... only then are they moved to the balance sheet as retained earnings.

Agreed. but not to get pedantic about such things, in this instance whether it is a profitable decision for Porsche to invest additional R&D in a NA powerplant just for their GT division would be better reflected in the balance sheet where it provides an overview of how effectively a company's management uses its resources.
Yes, but without GT cars and their halo effect, Cayennes and Macans become less desirable and less profitable.
Believe it or not, most those Porsche buyers have no clue what a GT car even is or desire for one. Motorsport isn't their focus anymore.

I've said it this whole time. Their real R&D budget was spent in models such as the 3RS, 4RS, and Dakar. Very unique builds requiring intense redesigning of multiple systems of function. The Special editions are place markers now to help rebound the budget shortfalls of the other lines. Also why there's such a focus to build and unload the ST. It's not that it's because it a unicorn as we're supposed to Believe, it will be a major bridge for lost earnings of other lines as it's cheaper to build and overall more profitable.... by a wide margin. 35-40% minimum per unit.
Porsche didn’t build the ST for the sake of just building it. It’s obvious by the comments some of you have zero knowledge of Porsche history.
The ST or whatever it was going to be called was planned years ago and the next one has been planned for now. They are Anniversary/Jubilee cars and Porsche has done one every 10 years, the last being the 50th anniversary cars. And further more the build numbers are always the same 1963, just like the 50th anniversary car before and probably the 70th anniversary car too.

Agree, most don't. What they see is a fancy, sexy race car and that their SUV is associated with it somehow and that somehow makes it cooler than another SUV they might be considering. Not to mention all of us who do know about GT cars and choose to stick with the Porsche brand for their family cars (i.e., Cayennes and Mayans).
