Bigger than that. This is Europe and California going to war with car manufacturers over climate change. They made rules that were incompatible with performance, and put the squeeze on producers of such vehicles.
Might as well get used to electric cars, because your next vehicle is going to be one. And forget about privacy, as it will absolutely be connected to the Borg.
I guess the good news is that daily driving was overrated, and car accidents will go down. You can sleep in the back seat while your robot uber drives you to work.

He could be convinced that the plaintiffs will be able to convince the judge that Porsche is the spawn of the devil, without believing it himself. That's my fear, personally.
There's a larger political backdrop here. The EU countries are trying to shake down Google, Facebook, and other US tech companies for every Euro they can grab, often on the thinnest of pretenses. The equivalent play on the US side was to take VAG to the cleaners, to the tune of tens of billions of dollars. There is no reason to expect this trend to slack off anytime soon regardless of the political party in power. Any shenanigans on either side will be brought to light, for better or worse.
I think that's all true, but this looks like to me to be some ambulance chasers in California pushing to be at the front of the line when they start slinging some cash around.

Welcome to the German pain train.
I'll take a check in lieu of a neutered car.
Might be time for an upgrade.
And to think my E92 M3 was feisty with rod bearings or premature injector failures that destroy the engine...
I'm trying to understand your position. Are you saying that you think Porsche caused global warming, but you still want to pile miles on your car?
Either you're convinced that Porsche is the spawn of the devil, or you're not.
I did not give an opinion one way or the other about Porsche and its (alleged) shenanigans. My opinion on that front is, if proven true, they are cons and they conned all of us who purchased their cars in good faith. If I can legally continue to drive my car the way it was built and sold to me, great. If I cannot, then like Bemo, I would rather cash out than drive a car that does not perform as well as it used to, prior to being "fixed" for the purposes of meeting emission standards. No, I am not looking to be an environmental scofflaw but yes, I would love to keep my car for years to come, as I had planned.

Not to disturb any potential environmental squabbles in progress, but if we should get bought out, I just might flip the M3 keys to the next lucky custodian too, and jump into a GT something.
I agree - I bought my car a month ago, with an expectation of how it performs, and I expect it to perform the same way as it does today. If they chop the ***** off my car, I’m out, and will expect a refund and likely will move back to a BMW M car. This just sucks....my plan was for the Cayman to be around for years. But I’m not interested in lower performance.
I have no intentions on selling my car. I'll be happy to have it "fixed" to renew registration and cash in a check, assuming we are talking $10k+, and then do a tune to make it even better compared to the car today! Maybe more low rpm torque, sport on by default, etc.

Like the idea as long as Porsche ponies up the $$$$! What tune were you thinking? Cobb seems pretty weak.
Take it in get the check apr tune gain 10hp and 10k. How can you not call that a win win. I would not lament about your misplaced expectation that any corporation is a good citizen. They are all bound legally to maximize profits for shareholders regardless of intent or consequence, VW just happened to get caught. They pay a speeding ticket and continue around the ring.
