Annoyingly the head units are VIN locked so you don't have to worry about options, you have to pay for a recode no matter what.

Well I guess it depends which board is broken, if it's the bottom half I am sure it would be ok, if it's in the main PCM part on top it could be tough. I just bought a hacked PIWIS and will check if it can code PCM's.

Default CarPlay default on start

Just installed my Joyetech last night. Thanks for all the tips on this thread. Getting taller standoffs was key.

I didn’t see this post or missed it. Is there a way to default to car play when the car starts up? Or am I being to impatient and not letting car play connect?

also, anybody get cd mechanical failure after the install? I won’t being using the CD player much but just wanted to learn about the error.

Takes like 20sec, but it auto switches from any PCM screen to CarPlay once detected. No need to configure this behaviour it’s default.

Got my NMautomotive kit installed yesterday. Pretty solid undertaking. Took me a good 9hrs including removing the rear bumper (981 cayman) and installing an OEM style backup camera. Everything works really nicely though.

Only minor issues are:
  • CarPlay icons are slightly stretch vertically. Circles are not perfect circles. It's very minor, though
  • Backup camera lines are too narrow. I wonder if they can be adjusted to account for different camera's optics.
Overall its fantastic, though. It feels like the car just got 10yrs newer.

Great to hear. What camera did you order? I ordered the NM kit yesterday.

I ordered this Nikata one:
Amazon Amazon

NATIKA Backup/Front View Camera,IP69K Waterproof Great Night Vision HD and Super Wide Angle Metal OEM Style Reverse Rear View Backup Camera for Cars Pickup Trucks SUVs RVs Vans (Black)

It comes in white and chrome as well. It's totally worth installing this type, imo. Taking off the bumper (at least on a 981) isn't that hard and it looks like a proper factory camera and doesn't disturb your license plate lights.

Do you have pictures of yours installed? I have a sensor for my radar package near my plate already.

Yup. This is a straight on view of it. From normal walking eye height you can barely see it.

If anyone is looking to do this retrofit, I have a completely new JoyAuto kit listed in the marketplace.

In the video's I've seen, it looks like it takes ~30 seconds for the system to come on-line after ignition on.

One thing that drives me crazy on my stock PCM 3.1 is that if I was previously listening to bluetooth music, it defaults back to FM on the next ignition-on and it's always damn loud, usually some obnoxious commercial.

After installation of the carplay mod, what does the PCM do in that first 30 seconds? Pure silence is fine, defaulting back to FM at loud volume is NOT ideal...

All the video's I've seen are fully voice-over so I can't tell what the PCM is playing, if anything, in that first ~30 seconds.

If you leave your PCM input to "aux" it'll never go back to loud FM stereo again, even without this aftermarket board
