In Quebec, you can declare $1 if the car is between 10 and 25 years of age.

When you import, you have to pay both taxes on the full price paid.. And with exchange and duty, that's a lot of money (totals over 30% for Quebec)...
Ouch. Well, that definitely complicates things. Hopefully a nice Canadian example shows up for you soon. Best of luck!

Not sure why the rules are different in Alberta, but a BC resident buying a car in BC has to pay GST 5% and PST 7% dealer or private. If a BC resident imports from the US, you still have to pay 12% tax plus 6.1% duty plus $200 RIV fee plus currency exchange. I know this from experience.

In either case you can declare a lower purchase price but risk paying a fine if you are caught.

You only pay GST on used cars if they're not bought from a private seller in Alberta.

Hmmm, I'm guessing that's sorta kinda the point of an auction... Or else they would simply have a BIN.

Also, one guy in the classified replying to a WTB mentioned that he will put his up for sale shortly... GPW on Red in the Boston area IIRC.

If you like the car, put in what you think it's worth or can afford. If you really want to own a p-car some day, you're eventually just going to have to pull the trigger.

For the auction price.. I prefer a starting price and no reserve... And a buy it now if you want.
Putting a lower starting bid and hiding the reserve is useless.

For the GPW on red it's really neat, I have enquired (as well as five other rennlisters) and the price is more than great, especially considering a full reseal and all the maintenance.

My girlfriend said a clear no-no to the red interior though...

I am putting a deposit on a 1992 targa today, can't wait any longer heheh and will try the targa see if I like it.

When you buy private sale in alberta, are you required to pay GST when you register it at Motor Vehicle Registration?

IIRC when I lived there, you do not pay GST if you buy a car from Canada and register it in Alberta, as GST has already been paid. You pay GST at the border when you import, whatever province you import it to.

If you buy a used car in British Columbia, expect to pay between 12 and 15 percent in sales tax, depending on the car's value and where you purchase it.

If you buy the car from a dealer, federal goods and services tax, GST, is charged at a rate of 5 percent.

Provincial sales tax, PST, is also charged at a rate of 7 percent for vehicles less than $55,000. PST increases by 1 percent for each additional $1,000, up to a maximum of 10 percent for vehicles above $57,000.

GST does not apply to used vehicles sold privately, but a 12-percent PST is charged on those.

Great thread...thanks to the OP for starting and all the useful information posted by everyone. I hope you don't mind me asking a newbie question. If this is the wrong place please let me know and I will create a new thread.

In everyone's expert opinion what is a reasonable price for a 89-91 964 for primary use as a DE/weekend fun driver car? From my research on Hagerty's website they state a Condition C (fair) should run about 20k. My preference is to find Black on Black C2 non-cab in 5spd. But of course with the few searches that I performed only turned up high mileage still in the 30's to 70k

Thank you in advance for your input and replies.
