964 Prices

I have no association with AutoKennel other than having sold my much loved '70 911E through them three years ago and purchasing my current '93 C2 there. I get their new inventory emails (how I got the C2) and this morning I received the email about the following:
1990 Porsche 911/964 Carrera 2 Coupe, Sunroof Delete / Manual Transmission. Euro/Rest of World (ROW) Edition, Ruf 17” Wheels by Speedline, Numbers Matching / Japan Delivery, Numbers Matching, 36,900 Miles (59,500 kilometers), Slate Grey Metallic (L22D/Q9) on Black Leather with Burgundy Accents, 5-speed G50 Manual Transmission with LSD
I looks very nice and very fairly priced (a bargain relative to what is going on over at BAT.

Paul at Autokennel is great to deal with and the cars always well represented. FWIW I would have preferred the monochrome interior instead of black accents, so cool on a slate grey car.

So I have my treasure and love this new inventory. My response was to forward the info to a few pals that want to join the club.

I was looking at '67 bugs for sale at thesamba.com and then went over to their aircooled 911/912/914 section of the classifieds and was amazed.
A '90 C4 with an asking price of $125,000. It appears to have low miles but $125K! Beverly Hills Car Club.
Are people actually buying at this price now?

The current Amazon Green C2 on BAT captures my heart but fortunately so does my car. I would buy it for sure if I did mot have my perfect car for me. Some folks will be getting a couple of really great cars in both cases.

I just looked at the Autokennel website and see that it is now "sale pending", not surprised.

You sold an M1 in 83? I looked at one in 84/85 I wanted to import but even then when the exchange rate hit 5 DM to 1 USD it was outlandishly expensive. I nearly picked up a 512BBLM for half of what they wanted for the M1. The M1 was always one of my favorite looking cars especially in racing trim. The fit and finish wasn't so great but I would have lived with it. Instead I picked up a very special 3.0RS IROC clone. I wish I kept them all.
I have to admit the Amazon could possibly give my car a run for its money. The car looked like mine when I purchased it in 05. Now it is heavily modified but shines just as nicely. I tracked the car for 10 years and it did quite well. My current 964 track cars are more advanced one being quite similar to a cup car in feel and performance. The other should be a GT3 killer when done. With the right hands on the wheel they are very capable cars just a bit lacking in HP these days. Nothing today teaches you how to drive like these older cars.
I would be surprised if the car doesn't hit a new BaT record.

You guys bring up an interesting point - that may have an impact on values (so my blabbing is relevant).
Last year when I sold my SWB and began searching for a C2 964, I wanted a silver/blue/green/grey. I didn't want a white or specifically a red. What did I end up with? Guards red. The price was right, miles a tad high (95K) but it was original glass, original paint with tasteful reversible upgrades.
That being said - I thought I'd have it for a short time, flip it and find the color combo of my choice. Well...where I am going with this is that I feel no matter the color combo, people are falling in love with them. That is where I am. Guards red is not my first choice, but the thought of selling the car? No way. Especially to think of starting all over again with sorting things out? Bushings, buttons, levers, trim, worn out parts.....I am just getting the car really dialed in.
I feel this is one of the reasons prices are going higher and higher. People, like myself, are just falling in love with the experience owning and driving them.
Last, I'll agree with @cobalt again, that the more rare and perfect they are (like this BaT car right now) the less likely people are to enjoy (deep down) the owning and driving experience for fear of running up the miles....scratching the paint...etc...

I inquired about this 14k-mile Midnight Blue Carrera RS and they want $450k for it. Beautiful car though.

Mine is not close to being as desirable as the 964's quoted here but I have changed the way I drive mine and it is to the point I am enjoying it less as I fear something happening to it. So most of my trips are driving early weekends or going to the golf club.

Looks like decent C2s are worth somewhere between 100k and 140k. Pretty wide range in my opinion for relatively similar quality of car. No doubt Amazon Green added some $

I don't know, these numbers kind of take the fun out of effing around with Porsches. I live in LA so taking the car out in traffic/freeways is no longer possible, weekends and early mornings only now; even then I am as jumpy as a newly incarcerated Paedo in the showers. Racetrack? Probably not, AutoX maybe but how am I going to make the jump to F1 from cone killing? So canyons and parking lots is all there is now? I used to DD the car, sometimes 4 of us would go out for dinner in the 964, local, shorties in the fold downs. No valet, here's $20 I'll park it for you.
Now the car draws a crowd most places, I have lost track of how many times I have been asked if the IMS bearing has been done. I just upped the insurance to $90k, too soon to go back and ask for $125k? Could I buy another Cobalt over Cobalt again for that? Could I ever find one?
I bought the car to keep the kids out of the 73, it was getting too valuable, maybe now is the time to go back. Plenty of 73s around if you trash one, a really nice one is only $75k.
So we trash the 95 M3s I bought and the 964 is in the living room as sculpture. Not really but almost.
The Euros have it right, long trips with your gal, pack light; the Alps, the Rhine, maybe some snow up in Scandinavia, good food. Provence .But not much more driving in LA in a $140,000 car.

I think life's too short to worry about the financial value of the car - the real value is in the memories you make with it. The only car I've had that I really miss is the one that me and my girlfriend travelled around in together, going places, doing things together, etc.
