Look here, and on FB Marketplace, Craigslist, etc. If you see a car that looks interesting to you, post it here and we can give you an idea of it it's worth looking at. Cars do pop up here for sale by forum members now and again, as well as in the main 928 Forum area. Just stay active in this forum (which is a good idea anyway if you're interested in owning a 928). Depending on where you are, you might also try to get to a 928 gathering that's near you. Cars change hands at those pretty regularly.

Good luck with your search.

That was indeed a shocking result.

I found this 1987 in Wisconsin. It looks really clean (pics are terrible. He sent me a video). Recent tires TB/WP. Only downside I can see is broken odometer with 130k (TMU, guy said “it just happened”). He is firm at $17,900.

flim flam man; that car with that presentation will sit forever. People miss the most basic sales 101 stuff and wonder why they can't sell. But hey, "he knows what he has, so no low ballers"

It may be a good car, but most will never know.

Meowsker: My .02 BUT the lower you go (Craigs) the more you must do homework and a PPI. It is a long way off (April), but Hershey/Carlyle is ideal if you can get there b/c the enthusiasts love to talk about their cars. They have a FS section, it's a swap meet, go early on Sat. You never know what will show up. Is there a local Cars & Coffee?

You might want to pony up the $17 bucks to join here, get some details in your sig line so people know where you are in case there is a local group of sharks near you. Hook up with them and get a ride; the diff MYs are different animals The Marketplace here is a great source.

People seem to get carried away. I have seen it first hand at Gooding live when a friends 1992 turbo S sold for $2.2M a few years back. This is reminiscent of how it began with the 964 market but has escalated to a point that is beyond crazy. Cars I passed on 4-8 years ago are now up 500-600-700% or more.

A year ago a cobalt blue 964 C2 could barely sell for $65k today people are fighting over them at 6 figures. RSA sold for nearly $200k and 3.3T's which could barely sell for $110k last year are now over $225k. I think we are seeing some growth in the 928 market. It does have the disadvantage of being broken down into 2 main categories pre 86.5 and post as most see it. As where the air cooled seems to be broken down into 5 or so sub categories and people seem to search within a single category. I suspect if we don't keep our eyes open these will have gone crazy as they are still an affordable car to some. I picked up an early 83 944 for $1k 8 months ago and now I have people interested in it after a little work and it looks like I can get as much as $6k for it. I honestly had no interest in the car I just helped a friend out.

I think we will see the 928 market jump suddenly just be ready.
Agreed on the pending jump in values (as we've all been saying for decades), but not so sure I agree on categorizing 928s into 2 main groups. There are some extremely significant years/options/configurations that can mean 50% or more value over the "regular" cars. I think our 928s can also be broken down into 5 or more sub categories, just as the air cooled 911s are. They're all awesome cars, but a few are significantly appealing to collectors, and while they're all moving up in value, there are a few years/configurations that are strongly leading the charge.

I loved the advertising flair: "been sitting for 8 years", followed closely by "I'm going to miss her"

Now, he’s upped it to $18,900. he added more blurry pictures - he took pictures of pictures. I thought if something doesn’t sell over a period of time, one would LOWER the price to sell said object.

ANY 30+ year old vehicle will have different needs at different times. Unless you buy a car that has been extremely sorted ($$$$$) make sure you have a reliable daily driver …

Welcome to the community, but I guess no one has the heart to tell you that you are at least 5-8 years too late in thinking you can get a $20k 928 with resto/maintnenace already done. Even the "least desirable" years ('80-'84) cars that are decent already commanding $10-15k with either mechanicals/paint/interior needs to be done (pick one to all three).
Since you're young, spend your time reading and obsessing in this technical forum (the best in all the car forums, including within Rennlist) and learn everything and ask everything.
Afterwards, spend some money buying one that needs some mechanical work and spend the rest of the leftover money on parts/interior. Worry about the paint when it runs and rides well.
People are generous with their time here. As long as you are enthusiastic, we will all help!

I agree with Hoi's assessment, however there is one way, for $20K, that you can get essentially what you are looking for. Filter your searches for 928s with over 150-200K miles in the 1980-1984 year range. Look for the current (or next recent) owner to have owned the car for at least the past 10 years and to have put around 5K miles per year on the car in that time. It's a narrow window for sure, but they do pop up for sale from time to time and are almost always listed for less than $20K. And there is nothing wrong with very high mileage 928s, especially when maintained and driven consistently. Good luck with your search! That's half the fun!

Expect to see a 46k mile 78 928 green on green pasha pop up somewhere soon.

EDIT: looks like it went to a rennlister. Congrats!
