928s for Sale

Wow. There's a huge difference between omitting details/photos (not unethical, but slippery) and manipulation (fraud). I've always been under the impression that BaT was very strict when it comes to any manipulation of the details. Their oversight made them unique in my mind. I see that a winning bidder of this car bailed in 22. Maybe he had the chance to see it before he paid. BaT is adamant that the reason for non-payment was not the vehicle but the buyer
What's really a shame is that reputable sellers with integrity will now be under unwarranted scrutiny as bidders catch on.

Seriously! Some of the better known sellers that everyone seems to love are some of the worst culprits. I have been on the receiving end of buyers who trusted BaT sellers only to find a car that was so misrepresented it is scary. One well known sellers. I will call him mister 12 o'clock makes up BS as he goes and has sold countless clearly repainted and flawed cars as original and flawless. The deceit is egregious and they promote it. They banned me on BaT and I can only post after my comments are reviewed because I asked the hard questions and pointed out the blatant lies. They have continuously censored the hard questions to make the sale. I wouldn't trust anyone on BaT selling. Even private sellers are selling cars they know they were taken on and just claim ignorance after the sale. Granted there are some good sellers but I wouldn't trust a one without looking the car over in person before bidding. Not worth the risk.

@cobalt,
I am totally with you. My experience is the same as yours. My 1989 S4 five speed from BAT from a private seller was miss represented I drove 800 miles to pick it up and was really disappointed but I went forward with it. After $12,000 later in parts. It is a great sorted car I low bought enough that it was worth the risk.

This is all news to me.
It seems that unlike eBay, buyers on BaT don't have the option to leave feedback on the transaction or their purchase that would provide bidders with a seller's rating. Almost as though sellers are BaT's only clients.
.....unless I'm missing something.

I had a 993 turbo in my garage for several months last year. The ad looked convincing but seller skated any direct questions. Big spiel about how every inch of the car was gone through. Mostly original paint and so much more. When the car arrived it couldn't be started. The typical alarm issues these cars suffer from had to be known by the seller. The new owner paid $205k for what should have been a $140k car. the only honest thing about it was the mileage. 52k original miles with 52k mile original brake fluid and the most deferred maintenance I have ever seen. A friend pleaded with me to help his buddy and to my chagrin I ended up spending a few hundred hours fixing so much. The brakes were 2mm under spec. Front rotors needed rebuilding. The vague shifting was the result of the bushings failing and the rubber boot used to keep water out only thing holding it in place. Axles, turbos, calipers, rotors, shocks, alarm all needed replacing or rebuild. The car was a complete recent respray in the wrong color except for the wing mirrors and third brake light which were all original and showed. When I opened the tunnel for the shift linkage there were thousands of spider sacks. The wheels were solid vs hollow spoke and I can go on and on.
Some sellers like Nathan Merz CVLC I would trust but he is one of the rare ones the rest I would run from and some here are big fanboys for some of the worst offenders.

That would be helpful. BaT was a place for buyers to come and now it is all for the sellers. They don't like RNM's.

I like Nathan what I have seen of him on the PCA insider videos. I am also a BAT commenter that gets screened because I call out the trash. I don't waste my time anymore commenting about the missing jump post cover.

OK so BaT is awful, PCar mkt is terrible, and there’s never any action in the classifieds here… that leaves eBay and traditional auction houses? Do we really think these are better options?
When the more respected members here put up a car for sale, they put it on BaT or PCar …

I bought 2 cars off BaT including my 928 (it was RNM but I bought it afterwards). I had no issues. I’ve seen cars sold by members here and I would trust their sales. I think the problem is with consignment dealers. I still trust the model, even with some of the horror stories

me, I was looking for one to buy for 16 months and checked it religiously - it’s dead) or Autotrader. Someone with a well maintained car will put it on BaT or PCarmarket - or give it to one of the auction houses if it’s a really special one.
The best OB 928s I saw in the last year have been on BaT and PCarmarket (including of course the epic ones sold by @Rob Edwards and @olmann )
things have changed and these online platforms are where some of the best cars trade now. That’s not to say that all the sellers or cars are good, it’s just that they can’t be dismissed in their entirety.
