Last minute surge.

With 30 minutes left, I thought someone was going to get an insane deal.

Yeah, I was checking that auction at 21 min left with only $24,750 bid at that time.
Amazing results.

Filter your searches for 928s with over 150-200K miles in the 1980-1984 year range. Look for the current (or next recent) owner to have owned the car for at least the past 10 years and to have put around 5K miles per year on the car in that time. It's a narrow window for sure, but they do pop up for sale from time to time and are almost always listed for less than $20K. And there is nothing wrong with very high mileage 928s, especially when maintained and driven consistently. Good luck with your search! That's half the fun!
Agree with GT6ixer's criteria, with the key being that the car was exercised (driven) at least some, and demonstrably so.

The saying with 928's used to be that they are cheap to get into but expensive to maintain (3x American domestic costs). The trend lately is that they are finally being appreciated for the great car we have all known they are, and so getting into one "cheap" is less and less likely.

To your question on where to look, I would start a separate thread here on Rennlist and similar forums if you haven't already and let everyone get to know you, what you are looking for, where you are located, and what you can or cant do on your own (I'm only barely good with interior stuff, myself!). Similarly, go to as many 928 events as you can. I did that for two years before I found mine, but that was primarily me learning about them and figuring out which one was best for me.

Best of luck in the adventure!

Interesting what these are going for and my EXTREMELY nice and no limits cared for 1990 S4 only bid to 17,800 on cars and bids. BAT did'n't even want to look at it. It ihas 158,800 miles on it and is in impeccable condition.
I just changed the oil pan gasket because I didn't like a tiny weep I found last week. I mean really, it makes no sense.

I think our 928s can also be broken down into 5 or more sub categories, just as the air cooled 911s are. They're all awesome cars, but a few are significantly appealing to collectors, and while they're all moving up in value, there are a few years/configurations that are strongly leading the charge.

I agree with you but most who I find looking are new to the model and I find that is how they see it. Compared to the 911 Air-cooled market which has clearer divides and people looking for one body type over another and each have their subcategories of rare and desirable models. The 928 doesn't have the extreme visual changes the 911 did and after a lot of time studying some realize which are the ones to buy.

It is encouraging we saw 6 figures all in for a GTS Auto. Maybe things will happen with this market as well. The 964 market has nearly doubled in the last year for some cars. 100k Mile turbo 3.6's for $300k. . I have a 92 US spec cup car I am working on and it is selling low at $250k I was offered one of these a few years back for $60k. I just got a very early build 944 with a lot of 924 bits in up and running after 20 years in storage. A year ago I picked it up for $1k. I have some time and $1k in parts into it but I have interested parties at $8k Another

Default 1987 S4 Auto Red, 170k miles $15,000.00

Hi All,
We have sold everything and moved into an RV. P cars and parts are all that is left.

Here is my initial offering.
This car was valued at Frenzy "21 for $25K by arguably the most knowledgeable market researcher in the 928 community.

Time and location make this for sale add not perfect, nor is the car . The interior has not been detailed at the time of this post. That will be updated next week.
I still plan to finish a few trim items (center console, Air pump filter top, reverse the hood shocks and detail the interior, with new carpets, and an OK cargo mat.

I have replacement interior rear quarter panels that go with.

Please email or message me for ALL of the details and tons more pix. I understand that I may get more $$$ on BAT or other places. My goal is to give a great deal to one of our own and not get the most $$ for it. This car has been a blessing to me for over a decade.

I also have over 25K in new and used parts that were valued using current prices from our usual vendors. A comprehensive part number index is available upon request. I will create a separate post for parts. along with my complete 1989 S4 Triple black auto with about 120K.
That being said, I reserve the right to include additional offerings in this sale with or without a negotiated price.

I will entertain a bundled package sale of the 87, 89, and the spare parts hoard.
Please...Interested parties only. I will not have time to entertain a running dialogue debating jump posts comments etc..

-----------------------------------------------------------1987 Porsche S4 156,000 miles showing on ODO. 4th owner Red Auto Tan leather interior.

I have owned this car since 2010. It was a daily driver after I got the maintenance up to date. Timing belt, fuel and oil lines, etc. Thrust bearing was working forward when I bought it. During the first refresh I was able to get a definitive measurement on crank travel. Way out of spec. I closed the engine up, centered the the crank and locked it down with Loctite. Drove it for 2 more years and bought a replacement long block from 928INT. Upon tear down of the replacement, I noticed a scratch in one of the bores. With extensive advice and consultation between my machinist and Greg B., we tore the block down completely and using the manufacturers specifications and instructions, over bored the one cylinder. Bought a single New OB piston, matched the weights with the others and polished the remaining bores. Heads completely reworked along with every other aspect of the engine. Currently everything under the hood except the fuel dampeners is new or refurbished, I have done all of the work myself except the machining of the block\heads, and AC recharge. Completely rebuilt engine 8\21 has 950 miles. Will change out break-in oil next week (12-3) with Brad Penn. Crank travel was .02mm. the low side of the factory spec!! This engine is tight and roars! All stock except Cat and air pump delete, with an older H pipe. I have the original cats and air pump system.

Your car is really nice. And IMO worth a good bit more than the high bid. I believe what held it back is the same thing that holds any collector car back, higher miles and custom upgrades. I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that if you returned the center console and wood trims back to stock and installed the stock wheels that BaT would take it. This is pretty much what Micheal did to his '88 S4 that had 150K miles. He had some custom bits on it and returned everything to stock and it sold for 33K on BaT. And that was pre-Risky Business sale. I don't think it goes that high if he left it modified. He also had it consigned through Avant Garde who IMHO present cars better than anyone else on BaT.

Wonder what this owner would get 3 years later? Same tranny and mileage, but nicer IMO (unless of course you have to have it in AG Metallic)

Bring a trailer told me yesterday they are not interested in mine because of the miles, 158,800. I told the rep that you show me another 928 you have listed that is more new than mine and could jump in and drive from new york to LA and have no concern about getting there. Greg told me my car was in the $40,000 range. Not many more experts out there with more knowledge than him. Bring a trailer thinks they know more.
