If seller paid $55K, and thinks he can flip it for more, he was delusional. It's not a GT. Low miles but $46K is resonanable.

Agree. If we assume BaT’s reserve decision is the result of a genetic algorithm then the next few 928s will get low-ball reserves.

55 was a bit high given that it either can’t be driven much or needs ‘everything.’

He wanted out of his note without taking a loss? Gotta wonder what the reserve was.

Well, regarding that 24k miles black '89 S4 5 spd on BaT. It does have a more desirable color combo and 5 spd to boost, so I would argue that ~$48k is reasonable since I sold my similar mileage white S4 auto for $39,999. However, dealer is delusional for paying $55k for the same car though. He would have to sell it for $60+ in order to make it worth his time/money.

Regarding the reserve, BaT may not be offering those generous reserves for much longer since 928 prices have been soft since the early summer and more frequent RNM auctions. Many more people are saving their cash and waiting for the next inevitable recession to hit and jump in when people are selling their collectibles for pennies on the dollar.

I found a couple of cars while scanning craigslist. Not perfect, I would call them projects, but both are 5-speed, run and drive (supposedly) and could be yours for under $5K.

1978 near Stockton, CA: https://stockton.craigslist.org/cto/...034696644.html

Owner of this 1984 near Pocatello, ID also has a 1978 parts car: https://eastidaho.craigslist.org/cto...033607555.html

OK, even though I am a GT fan, the cognoscenti here know that an 89 S4 manual also has it's charms and depending on your use case is just as good or better.

So, yeah, it probably would have needed virtually everything and the market is getting softer. The reserve was high too...

I fundamentally liked the car though, and especially so at 40 - 45k.

Close as you can get to a GT but not the same provenance. The low miles are a plus.

A little info from the seller of the 89 on BAT.
No, I didn’t pay 55k for it this spring, that’s still too rich for my blood. I think I did ok on the buy, but an unexpected tax bill made me think about liquidating the car. Not unhappy that it didn’t meet the reserve because I was, and am really on the fence about selling it.
A ton of views and comments that I felt were mostly very helpful actually made me feel better about keeping it! BAT talked me down from my original reserve and I felt like I set it at what I would pay for it. I certainly wasn’t looking to flip it or profit from it. It was a hard decision to possibly part with it and I feel like I won the auction, as I get to keep and enjoy it!

the black rub strip can go..but I’ve always like that Porsche logo on the lower rocker panels...fender decals look ok IMO. Still lots of work involved there...

I can really understand that email.

We have a group of people on this form that practically insist that any and all sellers must be top motivated and almost extraverted.

My take on buying 928s is that there is also a group of sellers that have some reason to want to sell, but aren't really sure, if they should. This makes for interesting experiences.

I bought my 90 GT from the most unmotivated seller you can imagine and it's a beautiful example. Also, I am not really into wheeling and dealing, if you are fine, but don't think I need to buy or sell like you do.

How about a 78 Cayenne 928???

Looks like a Euro, needs work but it looks like somebody started the project already with new carpets. Dash and pod look like the age proof early variety. Pascha.

I have been approached about buying a little red Italian car which now makes me want to possibly unload my 87 928 S4 5 Speed. It is Black on Mahogany (super rare) and incredibly well kept. Previous owner literally had hand written notes about quarts of oil, and service history is impeccable (documented). It has 109k miles on it but looks like it has 40k miles. With the BAT cars bringing $37k for a 78k mile example and $46k for a low mile example, what do we think the realistic market is on the attached car with 109k mile? If the Ferrari pans out this week, id likely list it for sale as this and one other car would have to go to make room.

Default 1987 S4 5spd

I have enjoyed the past 8 years of stewardship of my early, S4 but it will be time to pass this car on to someone else to care for and enjoy. I do not intend to fully market the car until the spring but figured I would post in case someone here is interested in a car that, I believe, is a true 928 unicorn.

Car Summary and Options:
  • 1987 928 S4
  • 50,902 miles
  • Vin: WP0JB0924HS860292
  • Guards Red (Factory original paint on body. Mirrors were repainted)
  • Black leather manual sport seats with cloth "Porsche Script" inserts
  • 5spd manual (option 481)
  • Sport Seats (options 383 and 387)
  • Sport Boge Shocks (option 474)
  • Piston Squirter Block
  • Flip Up Rear Wing
  • LSD (option 220)
  • 928Specialists SS X-Pipe & SS 928 Intl RMB
  • Factory Porsche Cup I wheels w/o RDK
  • XPEL Front End Protective Film
Known Service Highlights before my Ownership
  • September 2007 - 46,212 miles
    • Clean and flow test injectors (WitchHunter)
    • Replace brake booster
    • Replace clutch master cylinder and install GTS clutch
    • Install new alternator
  • March 2008 - 46,303 miles
    • Rebuild LH ECU
Service Highlights since Ownership
  • June 2011 - 48,150 miles
    • Replace Water Pump and Timing Belt - new Laso Plastic Impeller
  • June 2012 - 48,979 miles
    • Replace Fuel Lines with Greg Brown lines
  • May 2013 - 49,495 miles
    • Silicone Oil Pan Gasket, Volvo Motor Mounts, Delrin Steering Rack Bushings
    • Replace AC Compressor and all o-rings, refill with R-12
  • July 2014 - 49,593 miles
    • R&R MAS - Injection Labs
  • Aug 2015 - 50,397 miles
    • Repack CV Joints, Replace CV Boots
    • Odometer identified to be non-functional likely due to broken odo gear
  • January 2016 - 50,397 miles
    • Odometer gear replaced (North Hollywood Speedometer)
  • July 2017 - 50,560 miles
    • Replace Head Gaskets, cam chains, and cam chain guides
    • Top End Refresh - Cerakote Intake and Valve Covers, replate all CAD hardware (performed by Tru6)
    • Replace Timing Belt (Porsche factory)
    • Replace High Pressure PS Hose
    • Replace Belly Pan
  • September 2019 - 50,898 mileS
    • Change all fluids
    • Re-tension timing belt
    • Replace Harmonic Balancer w/ Greg Brown ATI unit
Improvement Areas:
  • Oil Pressure Sender Leak - there is a small leaks coming from the oil pressure sender where it attaches to the pan. The sender unit is new (replaced when the gasket was done) and should just need the locking nut tightened. We would have done it during the last oil change but the filter was installed and oil filled before we realized the issue.
  • Dash/pod cracks - the dash has some small cracks starting at the vents and the pod has a large crack down the center. The two options for replacement are to buy new parts from Porsche (availability was confirmed earlier this year) or to have them recovered by R Budd. The R. Budd option would have seams whereas the Porsche option would be factory correct. I figured that I would let the next caretaker choose the appropriate option. I will also include a dashboard core with the car.
Original radio, shift lever, steering wheel, air pump, air pump diverter valve, and muffler will also be included as part of the sale.

All service since 2007 has been performed by Dave Chamberland (Worf928). In fact, we know that Dave has been the only mechanic to perform timing belt service on this car. All service records are available for review. I will plan to detail the interior and have professional pictures taken in the spring but can certainly provide additional pictures as the car sits now to anyone interested. Here are a few pictures.

Asking price: $47,500 USD

Please send a PM if interested

This seller contacted me and has lowered his price to a more reasonable $5K (he said no lower but he also started at $30K!). I drove it a couple miles, it ran but was a little sketchy to drive. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...8%20for%20sale
No way can I bring another one home. Wife didn't speak to me for 6 weeks after the 1st one!

That is a great starting point. By sketchy, I assume you mean brakes and suspension were worn?
