I believe just the opposite. So many out there wanting/believing that they have an "above average driver" and the car is a total basket case. Buyers would like to be more informed about purchases and BaT brings that. It's easy to ignore the less educated comments and pass them on by.

I agree completely with Sean. The peanut gallery is essential to these auctions. One gets so much information and many critical eyes on a car that usually, cannot be seen in person. Note, the cars that have a lot of pictures, and good seller involvement with open, honest appearing answers, do much better as well. Look at 928 auctions by HLee and DMHager for examples of how to do it right, and maximize what you get. I have bought one car from BaT, and bid on a number of others, and the peanut gallery was most helpful.

There's a difference when you actually have owned the car in question and can chime in constructively versus picking them apart, being borderline insulative and adding absolutely nothing positive. Many of these people inappropriately comment and have no idea the time, dedication and perseverance it takes to maintain them and the fact that most of these cars are 30+ years old, (years and years and scrounging together dollars and dollars). Many of the peanut gallery you have no idea how some of these remarks sting especially if you're an owner and just not a dealer flipping a car. If commenters have legit questions, then by all means ask, if you have something positive to say by all means comment, there is absolutely no need to be vindictive.

I don't disagree with a word there. But I say cut through the bull crap and follow the intelligent posts - they add immensely. It's sort of like here (or maybe more like Pelican), you get lots of advice that isn't quite right, but over time, you learn who to trust nd who not. I imagine GregB winces on a daily basis when he sees us weekend warriors commenting on things involving these cars. But the collective knowledge still advances the cause. It's the basis for success in a wiki-like environment.

I love how you post here, post there, are insulting in both places and try to claim the high ground knowing that those you are referring to are in both of these places. I could have tanked that auction in a single post days ago with everything I see wrong on that car, but I chose not to. I've had several people ask me on this media and on FB what my thoughts were on it and I gave it an honest assessment. A pretty paint job doesn't make it a good car and if you think that ones in fine shape I would really hate to see what you've done to your own. Are you saying you are the previous owner of that a'86.5? Is that the quality of work you do? This quoted posts makes it sound that is the case.

Looking closer at the pictures, that car is a total mess. Cam covers leaking all over the engine, cracked vacuum lines, mis-placed intake runners rubbers, water soaked inside everywhere, dyed seats (poorly), stereo installed like a 15 year old did it in his first car.....I could go on. This is a perfect example of a $5k car needing $15k worth of work to make it a $12k car.

They can work for you or against you. If you are not open to the comments don't list there. Stick to Autorader and the likes. I sold my 91 GT there and I think the comments helped. I answered all questions quickly and was truthful. If you are tryng to hide something sell elsewhere.

I almost bid on that car... watched it go down to the very last minute.
But watching the dialogue, I held back. It’s an easy 24k car, but the seller wasn’t representing it that way. I think even if I bid 26k, it would not have met the sellers reserve. I think the seller was not being completely open about it. Funny thing is, if the seller had disclosed the bracket issue, I would have probably made a run at it. His notes did reflect new motor mounts, but what was the truth? I wasn’t going to risk any other hidden “gotcha” items.

It looks very nice and the condition seems generally consistent with a low mileage car that has been kept out of the sun. But the small mileage changes over the last 15 years hardly seem to cover the round trip travel between DMV, home and the occasional trip to the German Car Shoppe for service. The engine, wiring, sensors and other bits look clean but has the intake been painted??
